Do not go with any company paid CDL training . These companies are meat grinders . It is far better to go to a separate accredited school . Apply for a loan , grant , GI bill or anything else to get going . Before you ask I have done both . As far as transmissions most all major fleets are going automatic but a private school will generally have several transmission types to choose . It is nice to know the manual , cause some loaner trucks will be manual . Good luck .
