Walk away now, if they lie and cheat in orientation it’s a sign of things to come.

It's only orientation. It does not necessarily reflect how the company will be. I look at orientation pay as complementary lol....it's just enough to give you something to eat. I would not quit. I would ride it out. The real story will be how the company treats you once you get in a truck.

I’m kind of principals/character person. If I showed up to orientation and they told me there was a pay structure change I would analyze it and ask myself a few questions.

How badly do I need this job?

Do I want to work for a company that made the change in pay but did not bother to make a phone call or send a simple email telling me about this before I arrived and let me make the decision then if I was okay with it?

What is the likelihood that this is just the tip of the iceberg?

I mean they are getting away with it in orientation what other kind of slick shat they going to pull now and in future.

So depending on how I answered my first question would depend on how fast I was our the door. How badly do I need this job??? if the answer is pretty bad I’m still looking for the next one and I will stick around. If the answer is, I got three other companies calling me I would have gotten up and said no thank you immediately and walked out because the likelihood they pull a lot of other slick shat on a weekly basis is very high.

    $12 hr x 8hr = $96 a day so $4..a day less
IF orientation lasts over 8 hrs your ahead

I wouldn’t say leave, but it does give a lot of insight on the morals of the leaders of that company. It seems like if they wanted to change pay structure on orientation they would do it on the next class before it started.

Did you speak to current drivers working for the company before you showed up to orientaion? What's the work and runs like?

The new structure doesn't pay for days we're here but not training. There are going to be at least three of those. The old structure would have paid $100 per day, training or not. But the money itself is a secondary issue to me.

This is my point exactly. It's the dishonesty and what that might mean about them as a company.

Which brings me to today, Day 2. I got my Hazmat Endorsement and TWIC Card at the end of last year. I did both on my own and this is the first trucking company I've worked for since then. The recruiter said I would be reimbursed for the Hazmat.

Let me be clear about something. I did not take this job with the expectation that I would be reimbursed for an endorsement I got a couple months ago. In fact, I came to orientation fully aware that the recruiter might be wrong. It turns out my skepticism was well founded.

I was told today that the Hazmat won't be reimbursed because it's been more than 30 days since I got it. On its own, no big deal. That's the type of thing that can easily be dismissed as recruiter ignorance/lying. But coupled with them changing the pay after I show up, I'm gonna call it strike two.

I was a little PO'd yesterday. Now I'm getting worried. Now I'm starting to wonder if it might be better to cut my losses and walk away before I put any more time into these people. As I said in a previous post, pay and hometime are red lines for me. I'm starting to think they'll cross those lines immediately after orientation.

I hope you're right for OP's sake, but I have my doubts. The fact that they weren't willing to honor their word by grandfathering-in the orientation class that was already in session says a lot about the company. A company acting honorably would have announced that the current class will be paid as they were originally promised, like @Pepper24 said.

Tell them you are going to report them to DAC/HireRight and put a black mark on their record.

It will actually work out to the same or better money. You go on duty once you step on the bus and don't go off duty until you're back in your hotel room. Easy 12 hour days Monday thru friday. That's $720. When you're with your TE you should be able to burn your entire 70 in 6 days so you're making $840 that week.
