Check for a CDL program at a community college. More than likely, you can get a pell grant to cover 100% of the cost.

do the math if you drive the average 500miles per day 0.27x500=135
135x7=945 a week before taxes that's not bad at all to start get the exp and you can earn more..

I would say reality for a driver making .27 per mile should be somewhere around 650-750 gross for the week, like I said earlier this is decent pay, you're not going to get rich, can probably make around 32-35,000 your first year and gain some much needed knowledge of how things work. IDK, I think 500 must be close to an average for OTR, I run local and do 525 a day, I just can't imagine the miles on the road are less than what I'm doing, but hey I could be wrong.

The last job I had at .27 I did pretty well but I avg.12,000 miles per mo.no benefits or vacations and I stayed 50 months because my boss let me have the first weekend off plus a couple more week days to handle my business.I wouldn't drive for less than .35 now with benefits.

    Prepare for Flame...

I got my CDL through Prime. No cost up front. If you quit before 6 months, you owe around 6k. Quit after 6months its 3k. After a year its free.

No pay during the 5 to 6 week permit phase (though its possible to get through this phase in 4 weeks). though they do loan up to 200 a week to eat/live on the road with the intstructor. payed back at $25/week. Take or dont... you only pay back what you take of that loan.

Pass your test and you are officially hired. Training is 60k team miles at .12/mile or $600/week which ever is greater while on the truck. (if you take home time for a particular week you only collect the .12/mile... no $600 gaurantee on a hometime week). You get 10k mile credit for the permit phase.

Go solo company when you complete the 60k team miles and its .30/mile bumped up to .34/mile after 20k more miles. (you can stay with the trainer up to the 80k and go solo right at .34/mile)

All raises after that are a set milage based.

Up to .04/mile fuel MPG bonus. Health insurance, vacation, 401k etc.

Look into it. Ive had a great experaince here. Others claim to have not, and those guys usually Leased a truck. Do your research, ask questions and make your own decision.

People around here will tell you that Prime will force you into a lease. Ive never seen any evidence of that. I can fault them for making it look appealing, but its your decision. When I finished training I was asked whether I wanted to Lease or go Company... that was it, and I havent heard a word about it again. I know its there if I want to, but I do pretty good on the Company side to keep me happy.

Again, ask questions... do your own research, find out what you want... then make your OWN decision.

That's NOT math it a pike DREAM!
Pay is based on TOTAL miles driven in a pay period. Not some 500 mile a day dream. What if he had a 600 mile day a 500 mile day and a sit on his arse 2 days waiting for a load and then a 350 mile 2 days to get to a receiver? a whole 1450 miles for that week and yes it's happening a lot these days! What is the gross for that week? 391.50 before any thing is taken out like taxes and insurance or that oh so wonderful per diem.

I was getting paid $.27 back in 1995! So that piddling $.27 is a complete insult and it's called pay? That is jack crapola and these driver mills know it! They are still getting OVER $1.50 for CHEAP freight a mile to haul freight and more for the better loads and they offer this piddling kind of money to the people who MAKE this money for them!

Insulting to say the least even for a rookie!

Stop turning the key for this and make them lose more money on orientations for new drivers and the pay will come back up to what I was making in 2008 before I wound up fighting cancer which was $.41 a mile! To bad that company went to all L/P.

as I said average per week theirs all kinds of factors involved and other pay besides cpm and what your company pays I dont know about your company or where you live but we have a 500mile a day minimum we must meet and 10,000mile a month minimum we must meet give or take 20-30 miles they don't mind so 480miles on a normal day 600 on a good day.theirs also bonus's after 10,000miles and lots of other pay bonus's now that was stated as an average you never know what your gonna make OTR as it varies week to week so save some $$from a good week for those not so good weeks.

this is the normal for a entry level drivers if anyone knows better then speak up because who doesn't want make more money. after 1yrs alot more doors open for you till then get your foot in the door

    venne Thanks this.
