the problem is plain and simple.

keep your vehicle/s up to snuff. don't worry about it. if they can't keep mudflaps on. they probably shouldn't be owning a truck.

but i could also say that about log haulers. i don't think i've seen one truck yet that actually had ONE tire with some tread.

it must not payu to haul logs. cuz them trucks are in worse shape then even mexico.

Well, as I do OS/OW superloads 90% of the time I get level one DOT inspections every few days. I've had hundreds, been OOS less than a handful of times. Do I think its unfair or illegal that other O/O's have to comply with the same standards of maintenance that I do?

    NOPE!

Kind of like how I have had my truck for 7 years and it never had a back up light. Inspected and passed in CA,AZ,TX,MSx2,LAx2,NE, and yet I still get a violation for it this June in TX. The only violation that inspection. Or how about bunk restraints? Never in 20 yrs have I been asked about that till this past July at W Memphis. It was my only violation and kept me from getting a new sticker and $100 from my company, plus the points on my CSA.

There are some basics that all carriers need to comply. Mudflaps and tires are simple to check. I can't believe the guy with the mudflap issue left rather than replace a couple of flaps. Some of the owner operator carriers do require more frequent inspections than an annual. It can be a good way to catch problems before the dot finds them.

Sounds like these O/O need a different job cause they're obviously not making enough money to replace their tires. Even a Chinese set of drives doesn't cost that much. You get what you pay for but at least they'll pass DOT.

    Agreed with everyone here.

Freightlinerbob - it's the money greed that kills them. It's amazing - from what I've observed and seen, they make well over 2 grand a week after diesel yet refuse to maintain their truck. At the safety meeting, these were the same o/o's who were flashing their check stubs and bragging about it. Very sad!
