We all know that shorter does not mean faster or better or even cheaper .
You can run less miles and take longer and burn more fuel .
That is a fact that desk jockeys just don't get.

You are never out of route if you are going the best route to get there!

If a driver cannot do his job then he is not a driver in my book .

If they were taught that they had to read a map by the ones that claim to be trainers then they would know how wouldn't they ?

I can't blame a new guy for things that they were not trained to do by the ones that take their money and tell them they are now trained to do a job that takes years to learn to do properly .

I can blame a guy that knows he needs to be able to know how to pick the best way to do his job and does nothing to learn how to do it .
Counting on GPS and dispatch to get from point A to point B is not doing your job properly.

Just because they tell you how they think it should be done does make it the right way to do it .
You could always plan your route and if it isn't the route they think you should take you could always ask if why they chose that route over the one you picked so you could learn how to do your routing better.

Asking why and how will teach you a heck of allot more than just doing it the way they say without understanding why.

Of course this is just my opinion so we all know what those are worth .....LOL

Well the why and how of it is they use, get this, rand mcnally software to plan routes and fuel stops. Ironic the atlas has that route restricted but the software told me to use it. The software is supposed to pick the shortest route with the cheapest fuel stops. I have tried to change routes with dispatch and sometimes it works and sometimes it just won't provide a fuel solution.

Incidentally I have been trained to use an atlas, which I use with my gps and google maps. I just learned I need to rely on myself more and the company route less to make sure my route is good. Honestly I would prefer planning my own routes and fuel stops. The BFI I drive for trains students for 3 weeks and cuts them loose. All they want is dumb steering wheel holders. The smart ones either leave after a year or become trainers.

I delivered 45k worth of paper rolls for cardboard to a company off of a Texas FM road with a posted 58240 lb gross limit. No other way there. They get trucks every day with those rolls too.

I run that route a million times. You should of cut over to DeQueen and run up 71 the whole way.

The thing about these programs are no different than a GPS. They all use the base routing software. Some have altered the program to be more truck friendly.

I can almost guarantee you the fuel manager has been tweeking the software, They have options just like your GPS does. He probably has it on the shortest route. We went through the same thing with our fuel manager. After about 8 months, he finally started listening to the drivers.

What you do is call him and complain. If he does his job, he can manually remove 271 from the system and the next guy won't have that problem.

I can show you restricted bridges and low overpasses even in the Rand McNally map truck routes that aren't listed.

I can tell you are doing your trip planning correctly gravdigr.

The GPS complaints are getting old. They are people that don't know how to use them to their advantage. I'm surprised they even use a computer. Technology is technology. You either keep up or fall behind.

I remember the same thing happened when the come out with fuel injected engines. All the shade tree mechanics were scratching their heads and calling them crap.

Yep that is the route I would have picked, and the route my gps picked. It was 10 miles longer and 30 mins faster.

I did inform my DM about it, met him in person for the first time today. He told me he talked to the fuel guys about it to remove that road from the trip plans.

I have had a few deliveries where the only way into the plant was to cross a restricted bridge.
