A few years ago there was a big wreck on I-24 in TN just before the bridge over the reservoir north of Knoxville.

The DOT came over and let drivers know that there would be at least a 12 hour wait while the deal was cleaned up.

You could get off the Interstate, go 1/4 mile east, and run the old road right down to Knoxville. Some of us did... most did not fearing they would be "out of route" and their companies would charge them for the excess miles... one guy said it would cost him $1.50 per mile. So he sat 12 hours rather than drive an extra 1/2 mile... make sense?

No that is dumb, contact your company let them know that the road is closed and ask for new routing or an exception for going OOR due to an accident. When 40 was closed because of the rock slide it's not like people waited 7 months for the road to be open. Communication is still the way to resolve those issue if there is a financial penalty for choosing a different route.

Normally I don't do this but....I24 in K-town??? You got your cities mixed up or blue roads. As for the story if a company I drive for can't adjust miles for a detour in such a situation then I won't be with them long.

    Meltom Thanks this.

I'm fortunate in that I'm told where to go but not how to get there.

I don't see any problem with 'suggested' routing but if I couldn't imagine having to get permission to detour around a road closure. I've come near accident scenes where the police are detouring people around it. I couldn't imagine telling the cop that I was just going to stop on the shoulder until my company gave me permission to do what he wanted me to do.

How a company can put a person in control of a quarter million dollars or more worth of equipment and cargo yet not trust them to pick a route is beyond me.

It's easy, they start seeing dollar signs and they'll tell you how to run it so they can see more. If you have a good working relationship with your dispatcher they should cut you slack and cover for you (bend the routing) after the fact. As long as this isn't abused it's not a big deal.

I think most companies would complain if you DIDN'T detour around an accident. I got stuck on I85 in 'Bama once for about 4 hrs. FM asked me why I couldn't go around it. It was a sugar tanker that rolled over on a bridge and caught fire. Nowhere for me to go.

    You got me confused?

I-24?? That runs between Chattanooga and Nashville up to Clarksville, TN

The only reservoir I can think about is Douglas Lake on I-40 east of Knoxville. You cross the TN river on I-75 southwest and the Holston River just east of downtown on I-40.
Hwy 11 runs with I-75 below Knoxville and 11E runs with I-81.

I-24 crosses Nickajack Lake west of Chattanooga. 41 is the alternate route.

But we get the punchline! :)

When a side road runs with an interstate, there ain't anyone going to say a word. I doubt they would even notice on satellite tracking when they run close together like that.

That's correct, most systems don't even recognize there is an issue until you end up 25 miles away from the GPS breadcrumb assigned to your route.

when we drove for Fed Ex CC, sometimes the computer routing involved restricted routes and or low clearance....we dont have a GPS...dont believe in it...and anytime we look at routing on qualcomm we ALWAYS check it against the map( if going to a new place)....map and a phone...no gps for me
