Basically it automatically records all vehicle movement over 0.7 miles as line 3 (drive) time. You can idle around and change spots at a warehouse or truckstop without going onto drive time, but can't really go to another location. Of course, sattelite position/weather/humidity/cloud cover/natural obstacles will vary so it's not always 0.7 miles exactly.

You manually edit line 1, 2 and 4 time. If you pull into a truckstop and just park, the system will put you on line 4 after 5 minutes of inactivity. You gotta put yourself on line 2.

The system keeps track of your 11, 14 and 70 hour clocks and alerts you of any violations. You can pull up your current logs as often as you'd like. You can also go back and edit your logs (of course, you can't edit out line 3 time). You're supposed to "confirm" your logs once a day, which means you've officially submitted them and they can't be edited anymore. It's supposed to be like when you sign a paper log.

    Hope this helps!

my co. has thier set up, so if you go faster than 7 miles an hr, it will automatcaly put you on line 3.
I like the fact that the computer keeps track of when you 'split log a day. I never used to slpit log on paper, casue it can and does get confusing, but the computer keeps tracks of it.
My co. also has it set up, you can go to a website, and look at your logs for the last 6 months, as well as if asked by DOT you can also have them faxed to the officer.
We also have a line 5 , off duty DRIVING, used for personal conveyance, and or to use when we are out of hrs at the the dock, and are kicked off the lot, to find safe haven. No more than 1 hr/ 50 miles

I like that you can't really "cheat" the system. Once you start your driving day you cannot stop the 14 hour clock. It sort of forces you to get your rest.

I think of it as a 10/13/69 hour clock and keep that final hour as my get to a safe haven in an emergency hour for all the usual reasons, truck stop full, can't stay at shipper or consignee, traffic jams, accidents etc..

FYI...the company sets the parameters of when it automatically switches you to "driving" ours is 1 mile, talked to somebody whose company did 2.5 miles
Same for "on duty" some companies have it so as soon as you set the brakes it goes into "on duty"

I've also learned you can cheat a little bit. It can't log you for less than 5 minutes of drive time. Once I had to leave a shipper and park on the shoulder of the on-ramp. I got a violation for driving on line 3 for a few minutes, but I put myself on line 2 as soon as I stopped.

When all was said and done, it logged my couple minutes of drive time as line 4 (on-duty).. which I can edit out.

Not wonderful, but just a little trick that got me out of a jam once.

Whether or not a driver is able to directly edit the qualcom log depends on the company and how the qualcom logging interface is set up. Many companies require that changes be done only via the 'log dept.'. The driver must call a company number, wait on hold til your call is taken, and then explain what changes need to be made. The company keeper-of-the-logs can either make the changes requested or disallow the requested change based on the explanation and what s/he is seeing on the monitor while examing the log and the GPS positioning system that is tied into the logging function.

The best advice: don't try to out-smart the system. :biggrin_25526:

I did the same thing the other day. I called safety and she edited it back to on duty. I had to leave the shipper and get to a small truck stop 2 miles away. We use Peoplenet and it gives me the option to cancel the status change but I have to keep hitting the skip button. Course a msg just had to come in while I was doing it and I couldn't hit the button until I read the message, which I can't do while driving, and it switched on me. No big deal though.

Ours also does the auto switching, and I don't know if QC will work the same way, but when you stop and it switches to on duty 5 minutes later, it makes the change retroactive back to when the truck stopped so you don't lose any time.

It seems every reply is assuming you are getting electronic logs with the qualcom.

KLLM has qualcom for communications and location, but we still do paper logs. Of course if you cheat on your logs, and the company gets suspicious, they can be checked against the qualcom location info.

Ours is specifically for communication. drivers send standard messages like:

    Rolling to load
    arrived at shipper
    loaded and rolling
    arrived at delivery
unloaded and waiting for new load

Dispatch sends pre-trips, confirmed trips, directions, general routing, direct to door directions, fuel stops...

as a single driver we can not read or send messages while the truck is moving. every time it beeps we have to pull "to a safe parking spot" and once the QC reports the truck is not moving we can read or write.
