Trying to decide whether to rebuild a 3406E Cat Engine (Serial #starts with 5EK) or swap it out for a C15 Cat (Serial #starts with MBN). Which would be best for performance, reliability and fuel mileage?

I'm certainly no expert and there are plenty on here but from my research I would rebuild the 3406E. The MBN has a pretty poor reputation in comparison. You really can't go wrong with the 3406E or 6NZ Cat engine.
dkdist74 Thanks this. -
Decided to build the 3406E. Is the extended warranty worth the money?

I have a 5EK, and when the time comes I'll rebuild it. Great motor.
-
Better off with older motor less sensors less problems
-
best to replace all the sensors when you do the rebuild. the oil sensor on my 5ek started giving erratic reading at 1.1 million. the cam sensor failed at 1.3 million due to metal fatigue. not easy to find a cam sensor on a sunday afternoon from a rest stop in middle of no wear

build the mbn with 6nz parts and talk to mr. haney

I'd like to talk to mr. haney

I vote for 3406E. Much easier to work on and it is more reliable.
Both 5EK and MBN are of the same emission level (pre EGR in USA ore Euro-II here), but C15 was made for future emissions and was made for road use up to E-IV and EPA2007 but was discontinued becouse of new emission rqurements -
