Yes hello my name is Gary
I was recently Hired on by Maverick Transportation LLC out of little rock Arkansas , today is March 10 2010.
I signed up with the company on or around 02/19/2010, I was called to take a bus out to there terminal in little rock on tuesday the 23rd of Feb
at that time I was in the process of selling my home and folding up my Hvac business due to the bad economy, I told the recruiter, I would need one more week if it were possible, because I had to remove furniture etc. from my house etc. at the same time I was going to sell my e250 2002 van being that I was folding up my business.
The Recruiter said she would call the following week on monday if they had something and normally every week they do.
She called the following week I was so happy to have a job, I finished up removing everything from my property and took my truck to a used dealer and just sold it fast knowing I was going over the road.
I was told by the recruiter to have steel tipped boots, long sleeve shirt pocket knife 25 foot tape measurer etc.
I bought all this and was all packed, made my girl friend power of attorney to handle the sale of my house while I was gone.
I was told by the recruiter that I would have to leave on friday March 5 2010 and that orientation would start 7AM sunday morning March 8th 2010 also after 5 days I would be paid 500 for orientation then would spend 3 weeks training for flat beds in N.C. .
I had told the recruiter I had not hauled steel or drove a big truck since 1997, she said no problem we have people that never drove etc.
Here is what happened I had some friends drive my 50 miles to atlantic city NJ to take a gray hound bus to little rock arkansas.
Gave my conformation number received my tickets as I had 6 stops on the way to transfer from bus to bus.
While in atlantic city bus terminal at 4:30 pm my bus was to arrive at 6:30 pm and I would arrive in little rock sunday at 12:45 AM.
The bus never came I waited now I went to the ticket both they told me the bus was full, so now I had to re-route my trip and get new tickets cause the time would be off on my stops.
I did now I was leaving at 9:45 Pm and would arrive in little rock 6:30 Am sunday morning.
Well I did it and every time I reloaded removing my bags and loading to the next bus they were full and I could not sleep, the trip was horrible but I made it there at 6:30 Am sunday half asleep and half awake.
I called Maverick when I arrived shuttled into the terminal, picked up my room key was told to be at orientation 7am, ran up to the room dragging my bag, took off my steel tipped boots peeled off my socks feet were soar, showered shaved changed. made my 7 Am orientation 5 minutes early.
Orientation Went On Until 6:30PM I managed to stay awake and tried my best to look alert and due my best, knowing once I had some sleep I would be Ok the following day.
Well made some friends with some Maverick truck drivers there, Nice people.
Ok here is what happened wake up next day class starts 6:30Am went down to class, we were told we would get are Dot that day we all lined up in the hallway to get drug tested and Dot, I was fourth guy from the last on line Never even took either test was pulled off the line by the teacher and his friend told to come with them in there office, then was told I was not maverick Material and they handed me a paper with a comformation number for the bus ride home this was at 7:30am in the morning also was given 65 dollar check.
I was beside myself, I asked the instructor why was I being cut what did I do wrong, he just said again your not maverick material, I had told him about my bus ride and the day before was very hard for me to do all the paper work etc. and look alert which I managed, asked again what was the reason again this little man answered your just not maverick material, as his friend looked on.
Was told to be packed and ready by 830am and the shuttle would run me back to the bus terminal in downtown little rock.
I know this is a lot to read I am sorry.
About me I am 6 feet tall weigh 215, 48 years old German and Italian, I don't drink, I do not do drugs, have no health problems, good shape, I don't have tattoos and don't wear jewelry, I am easy going person not loud or out spoken.
I was the only guy in my class with a northeastern accent.
I have no problem with people race religion or accents etc.
I just Truly feel I was singled out for what I don't know.
this ticket was already made up the day before this was pre-planned I think.
Now I am back home just arrived back, was thinking of what type of actions I can take against this company or I f Should, maybe BBB or another. what would you do in my place?
Just to add I have a clean driving record 0 points, also had taking my hazmat test passed and was cleared with my fingerprints etc. and took my Dot passed 3 to four weeks before I signed on with maverick

Nothing you can do, Welcome to trucking in 2010
Gary7 Thanks this. -
Maybe this had something to do with your getting cut?
Maybe they felt, "hey if this guy complains about a bus trip, what's he gonna do when he has to tarp a load in the snow after a long day behind the wheel?"
Anyway, if you have a least a class B CDL, look for local work around home, maybe a staright job or dump truck.squirrelnut1416 and dollylama Thank this. -
Maverick is very selective. I have seen several things that triggered a bus ride home. Health or medical reasons, appearance, attitude, complaining, or anything that reflects negative outlook on their drivers. They want the cream of the crop. Their drivers are what their customers see and talk to. Not the voice on the phone. You have to prove yourself to maverick if you want to be a maverick. Kind of like the marines. They are looking for a few good men. They know what they are looking for in a driver. Even foul language or talking about the girls in the office while you are in the break room will fall upon listening ears. I do not know what they seen that they did not like, but you did not make the cut.

i say p--s on them and find a real trucking company that at least lets the trucks run the posted speed limit. You MAY make a little less per mile but you will enjoy the job much more.
The bus ticket was the first red flag.
Maybe you can get on w/an HVAC company and be an employee rather than a driver during these difficult times in which one has to prove that they are able to be a maverick.HA!
steer clear of trucking until the economy turns around or work part time somewhere until the driving job that you really want materializes. You do not necessarily want to drive for such a large outfit IMHO.TOO many rules and sucking up that seem to go on which you just experienced.
best of luck-Gary7, bamanation and MSS Thank this. -
bamanation, jxu417, dollylama and 3 others Thank this.

Your post reflects what they don't want in a driver. Thanks for giving an example!
jxu417, dollylama, Pumpkin Oval Head and 3 others Thank this. -
so you are saying that the OP is not or will not make a top notch driver? do you know the OP well enough to make that declaration?
you had a 70 mph truck. you had good hometime. you had nice equipment. you were treated well. you are no longer there.that is an interesting argument that you attempt to make.
well then does that indicate that you were not a top notch driver? if i read your post w/comprehension then you declare yourself to not be a top notch driver as you HAD all that yet no longer drive for them. what happened? did you get that bus ticket back home too?
I did not get on here to argue,I am able to do so,but i did share my opinion to an individual that is apparently just cutting his teeth in trucking.
you sir seem to be telling the OP that he can not make it being a driver.I did the opposite.
sorry that you misconstrued but I refuse to kick someone that is already down-iaretea222 and Gary7 Thank this. -
also I tarp hundreds of loads in the snow I was a flatbed regional driver 13 years ago.
work don't bother me. -
