I'm not trying to start anything here, but come on dude. The loads are drop and hook going from Ohio to the Northeast. The figure I gave is money to me (fuel included and all tolls paid). Thats pretty sweet rates for what the typical dry van rate are right now. If you think I'm hauling it to cheap then meet me somewhere. I'll give ya the keys to the truck, my laptop, and everything else you need to run my business. If you can do better then I salute you.
All I was originally saying is that not all the loads are being hauled for cheaper. Some of it comes right down to people wanting to much from a company in these bad economic times. A company can only stretch so far before they have to make a change. This LTL company made a change. They pay us pretty good to move their loads over the weekend cause
A. The drivers didn't want to work the weekends
B. Maybe they wanted to much money to work the weekend or
C. The drivers are out of hours.
I am just going by what the yard dogs, office help, and a few of the LTL companies drivers were telling me.

Con-way Freight does not normally run on weekends. You'll see a lot on the road till about noon on Saturday but we are returning from Friday's run at that point. Generally the only time we have runs that originate on a weekend is if there are no empty miles involved, so short drivers it was the only option, or if it is weather related. We have been loading vans to run over the weekend because we are so short on manpower. It gives them an extra day to move it the rest of the way. We have also been running some meet and turns on Saturday because we don't have enough drivers to cover all the Friday night runs/Monday day runs.

Drilling rigs can't just stop drilling because one of the haulers is tired and wants to go home. People don't always work those kind of hours but we're willing to put the time in to get the job done.
9hrs a day.... pfft.... no wonder my packages are always late. -

Wow, that's your reply? I should've guessed. It's what always happens when immature men that aren't clever, witty or intelligent enough don't have a relevant response to something a woman says. Or when their fragile male ego is bruised by knowing a chic can do something they could never imagine being able to do. 'Ooh she can't keep a man', 'ooh she must be a lesbian', and let's not forget the ever popular 'ooh she's ugly and fat' line too.
Not only are you lacking in the maturity department but you must be seriously lacking in the reading and comprehension department also. Try to reread the post. I never said I work around the clock, but I will work until relief shows up if that's what it takes. There is no bragging in it. It's pride. I don't always like it. When I start at 5:30am and I'm still stuck at a rig at 8pm, I'm not thrilled. I do want to go home. But I know what needs to be done and it's something I agreed to doing when I took this job. Sometimes we're ripping and running trying to keep a reserve pit from breaking out, polluting and potentially killing acres of ranch land, because the rig is taking on water too fast. When they finally kill the well and the flowback stops you can take a breather and be stoked that you guys kept it from breaking out. One should always have an element of pride in a job well done regardless of what the job is.57104 - Ya Heard! Thanks this. -

Tankegirl80, I apologize for saying that...you're right it was immature and uncalled for. It's good to hear from drivers like you who take pride in their work - so few do these days, it seems. Best of luck to you down there in the oil patch.

It's an interesting debate. We have run into instances where an outside truckload carrier was so cheap, it cost less to use them on a westbound short haul than our own driver, equipment, with freight returning to our terminal from that short destination. Makes ya wonder. There were also numerous instances where we would strip out two pups ready for day line-haul and load that freight onto this carrier for the remainder of the schedule.
The coast to coast stuff I completely understand. To get from NY to Ca you would need about 10 relays which would no doubt involve a ton of empty miles. Makes much more sense to load it on a van and go. It is the short haul stuff that kills me. Especially west-bound because no empty miles would be involved. -
To Jakebrake12.....Was wondering if you're out of the New Columbia terminal and what my chances are of getting hired there as a recent school grad. I graduated last month from Schuylkill Technology Center's 10 week course (PTDI certified) located just off the Minersville exit on I-81 . On Con-Ways website they are seeking drivers for the Milton location. Only driving experience is non cdl Straight truck for 2 years in '07 / '08 and was Motorpool in USAF over 20 years ago. Don't really want to do the Swift, Werner, etc way, but may have to eventually since I'm having a hard time getting work due to lack of experience. 45 years of age probably doesn't help either...lol...I may just give it up totally and go back to driving a forklift or possible yard jockey.
