I'm looking for some solid training coming out of CDL school. Even better, a company where I might stay put rather than do six months or a year and then jump ship.
I've looked pretty hard (and like what I see) at Roehl and Schneider. Now all of a sudden Con-Way truckload pops up with some pretty good reviews. Haven't gotten much info yet on their "boot camp" (any experiences?). They have a terminal within minutes of my home in the Twin Cities area.
Would love to hear from people who have a year or two experience with any of the above!
Con-Way, Roehl, Schneider for Student?

Im not a driver but I can say that after CDL school my husband struggled with his driving. Mainly because the school he went to only used automatics in training. He first signed on with McElroy and got so discouraged he was ready to give up truck driving all together after one week. He signed on with Schneider and they were such a blessing to us in the way of training. He said he learned more in one trip out than he had all along. I dont know about the others. But I would definitely reccomend Schneider. However, it took us almost 4 months to get all the kinks worked out and now about 6 months later he is just now finally starting to make "good money" so the best advice I can give is stick it out.
grusco Thanks this. -
Cross Con-Way off the list. I did a job search for their truckload jobs in MN and up popped 8 opportunities. One of the 8 was for Student Driver OTR. I wanted some more information so I phoned Con-Way. They DO NOT hire out of MN. Interesting that their web site indicates they do. Oh well, could be a case of the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing.

NO matter which company you choose ask them if the trainer is allowed to sleep while you drive. If they are you will be an ATM for the trainer and won't learn anything. The trainer should be in the jump seat and out of the truck when you are backing. When I worked for Schneider National the trainer would get fired for sleeping while a trainee was driving.

I work for con-way LTL. Truckload hires out of joplin, mo. You can ask to be based out of the cities. everything is done through the website. You can certainly apply online, see if you get a response. Out of minneapolis, it's probably a scheduled run to calgary, edmonton, or regina. You must have a clean record, and be able to get your fast card.
