I am not a new driver, however I was speaking with a new driver this morning and he asked me a question I felt was appropriate for this forum. His question was (When did you feel like you were going to make it through your first year)? I thought about it and decided for me it was a very rainy day in Indianapolis. I had to make a delivery coming from a four land downtown street into a garage like loading dock. There were cars parked on both sides of the road. I only had one person stopping traffic for me. The area around that dock was very narrow. The dock was not designed for 53 footers and my tractor stuck out into the street a bit. I got it in though. It took them a while to unload me, but from that day I really felt like a truck driver. Since then I've had difficult backs but all the lessons going back to my early days guided me. We have a lot of new drivers that I am sure would love to hear some war stories and how you made it through.
Confidence in your ability.

6 months in... First time down Donner Pass was at night in the sleet. Loaded with 44k of bottled water. Just kept thinking 'slow n steady rules the day'. I kept her geared down and stuck like glue to the right lane.
8 years later I am still picking parts of that seat out of my rear! Never been happier to see Sacramento before or since. LolPintlehook and tucker Thank this. -

Not a one time thing for me... Every day I gain confidence.... One day up a notch or two... Then some days I get knocked down a notch or two... Just keep learning from mistakes, and accomplishments.... Every day
Made some awesome backs... Then the next day have 4 open doors on either side of me and I can't get in straight....lol
Some days I feel like a professional... Other days I hope no one finds out how little I feel I know....
Just keep on trucking.....tinytim, d o g, RicoNC and 1 other person Thank this. -

Got stock in traffic in PA and decided to take Google maps directions to avoid it. I am sure those little streets have never seen a semi before. I spent much more time trying to get out than I would sitting in traffic. But when I did get out all wet from the sweat, I felt pretty bad ###.

I agree with the other driver who said he learns every day from his mistakes and accomplishments.
I remember blindsiding into a dock at a small place in baltimore when the ground was covered in ice. Slipping and sliding all over the place. Cab was at 45 degrees when all was said and done but trailer was almost perfectly flush. Dockworker seemed to understand my trouble and said the small gap i left on my left side was fine and unloaded me. Felt pretty good in my abilities given the circumstances. Of course some days I get knocked down a few pegs lol. -
