Some weigh stations that have those lit signs Only weighs a few trucks at a time and the bypass remains on till all those 3 trucks are weighed. In other words some DOT doesn't wanna do any more then they have to so u see a lit bypass go with it.

If you get a green light you are free to bypass in every participating state unless you are oversized, over dimensional or pulling a hazmat / permit load. Any other time, you are free to bypass. The prepass doesn't trigger itself, they trigger it. If it's green, it's because they themselves have you bypass.

I don't do hazmat or oversize, so far it's 4 votes to follow pre-pass and 3 to follow signs.

I only have myself to blame.

    permitted loads

On the permit, there will some wording that says 'all permitted loads must enter OPENED weigh stations regardless of the prepass and the bypass sign. If this is not stated on the permit, there will be some instructions as to attaching and becoming familiar with the Regs listed in that state's OSOW provisions, which if required, renders the permit null and void if you do not have them. Certain states then require the drivers sign and date the permit stating that he is familiar with the provisions.

Sign says OPEN. Permit says you go in if opened. Next sign says, permitted loads stay right, must stop and check in...etc. Scalemaster directs you to bypass. You follow the posted sign for permitted loads, not the scalemasters directional arrow.

As far as the non permitted loads and the prepass and the electronic signs, Louisiana will have an HP sitting on the exit ramp of the weigh station, controlling the prepass and the electronic sign. The electronic sign will say bypass, and the prepass will blink red. If you bypass the scale, you get an instant $500 fine. If you go in the scale, it will bypass you out. Boogity boogity.

Prepass trumps the electronic sign. Permit trumps prepass. OPEN and CLOSED trumps all.

There's a reason the green/red pre-Pass light blinks for several minutes after the fact- so that staties and dotties can see proof of the bypass signal.

I always thought that was the reason but have never read any publication that stated it.
