Yep. But you can’t switch back and forth mid cycle.

That statement is true if taken literally, but midnight to midnight just happens to be the way a traditional log is configured.
It's not YOUR 24 hr log necessarily, that's any 24 hr period.
It's designed so your sleep cycle doesn't change all the time, unlike US reg's.
At least that's how I understand it.

I don't want to be a dick, but won't the US DOT look at your logs either roadside or in an audit and consider you in violation ?

    Just asking

Good question, but the answer is you will not be in violation. Canadian drivers are subject to US rules when in the US and vice versa.

As an addendum, I run in Canada frequently and them familiar with the rules. However, I was confused by the specific situation I was in yesterday because I had run three hours after midnight and I realized that there are two different things you have to comply with. 13 hours of driving in a work shift in Canada but also 13 Driving hours in a calendar day. Because of the way things worked out, I had to stop for a relatively brief period of time and let midnight Pass.

    It works like this
As it is written, you are allowed to enter the country, say if I have done 12 hours in Canada I now need a 10h break immediately. You must go to first place and rest. Well...lots of border crossings have quite a drive before you can just whip in and rest. Same for if a 30 min rule is needed.

I just run it so I have plenty of time when I cross to park somewhere. Easier than possibly arguing with dot about it.

It works the other way as well. If I am legal on all fronts except I am going to hit my 24h off duty required after 14 consecutive days without a 24h period and I enter usa on day 14 going across the country, as long as I'm good by usa rules I am good to go. Neither country can give you a hard time about what you did in the other.

pretty much,,,line haul departs all times of day,,,my shift departs 19:00 so I have 16 hours to get back,,,its a 8 hour run but occasionally get delayed and regardless of what the company tells me I go OFF DUTY soon as I stop even though I am paid waiting time...I might need those 2 hours off duty if delayed too long

A former co worker was crossing from Detroit to Windsor he had 1 hr of drive left in the USA he burnt it up in lineup and showed a violation. He parked in Windsor the next day Putnam scale wrote him up even though once he crossed he was legal.. he learnt that he should’ve been on duty not drive in lineup.

    Something is not right.
What is the difference, driving is still on duty and as far as I know if you have to move the truck that's driving not on duty,
I have also been told they will cite you for taking too long or not long enough driving time from the border. That was before Jan1 though.

Wrote him up for what? The elog showing a violation of US hos? Of recording the time waiting in line on line 3 instead of line 4? If they want to get super technical, at what point do you legally switch hos rules? Top of the bridge? When customs says you can go?
