Wow, they used to beg for drivers. I went through their training about 6 yrs ago and had to put in a year to payback schooling. I guess that would be the only way to get in as a trainee although i hear they want 2 yr. commitment now. Good luck

If they have an opening on a dedicated account, anyone can apply. At least that was how it was when I worked for them. I came out of training and right on to walmart ded. in Ky. Pay was'nt great to start with, but I run into schneidermart drivers alot where I work now and most say they can make into mid 30's first year with decent home time.

Nobody can tell you what company will be the one for you. They can only pass on their experience and what they have seen. You've already got a smart head start by listing your goals. You should expand on that list however before you start looking for a company. You'll want to know the benefits and medical care and any items you feel that is important to YOU. Pay,hometime, safety record.equipment type, and the company drivers attitude. That's just a few I would use.
Recruiters will tell you what you want to hear. They do not work for you so you can count on their information to be bias towards the company or them. What I would do if I were you I'd finish the list and then start the research. Research does not mean just the computer but talking with the companies either by phone or in person. I would go in person if you can because it conveys a much better message to the company. Also when you're there you can look around and maybe ask a couple of drivers on how they like the company and how long have they been there. Ask them if there are any drivers that have retired from the company as drivers.
You can find a good list of companies to drive for if you download "Trucking Companies" in your area. Do not download trucking jobs because all you'll get is the bottom feeders. A good company does not need to use recruiters or advertise because they keep drivers. You'll have to weed through the list because you'll get truck rental places and other companies that don't use drivers. But you should be able to come up with 20 or more companies depending where you are. You can expand the list to get more.
Then once you get a good idea of what companies you might want to get on with go and see them. You can explain to the company why you want to work for them and ask what it will take. That shows them you're interested in the job and they just might keep your application near the top. You do this and you might just get lucky and land a great job. If not and you go through all your prospects then you can contact the recruiters for the companies that have the high turnover rates. At least you'll know you gave it a good shot. Then after you spend some time behind the wheel you'll have a better idea where to go and then you can make your transition.goin2fast10 and ScooterDawg Thank this. -

Man, I appreciate that info. Actually, I did do a search for trucking companies in Raleigh, and to say the least, the list was overwhelming. And yes, I did see a lot of rental companies. I reckon there is no quick way to make a decision, and I am going to wear the phone out tomorrow. And I actually do have a significantly longer list of wants, including benefits packages and the sort, but I didn't want to sound TOO PICKY. After all, the post was quite wordy, and I figured I would list the things that I am absolutely unwilling to waiver on.
I know I am going to have to make compromises at first, and I am not above that.
But I thank you for taking the time to reply. It has given me yet another approach to my dilemma. And come Dec 19th, I am on vacation through the end of the year. Then I am unemployed (took my vacation as the last part of my notice), so I will have some time to look deeper.
Thanks again! -
Good advice Gashauler. Unfortunately, when starting out it seems awfully hard to find a company that will take a driver without any experience. Scooterdawg, if you do decide to go with a training company do bear in mind what gashauler said, recruiters will paint the rosiest of pictures. they have a program that will take driving school grads and then pay so much per month toward your tuition if I read it right. That might not be a bad way to go if you can afford the money upfront. That way you would'nt be tied to one company if things did'nt work out. Good luck
