First of would like to thank God for this forum it has helped me get through the few months that I've been trying to deal with getting into a school there has been so many helpful people and answers in this forum.
I have told a little of my story in a previous post and got some good answers. I will try to break down my story as short and as little as possible.
I'm currently 42 years old and reside in Pennsylvania back in October of 2007 I left my job in the pursuit of driving truck thinking I would not have any problems going to one of the schools. Unfortunately not having known of this forum or doing any research I proceeded to deal with drivers choice. After talking with the recruiter and getting all the necessary questions that he asked me on the phone he said he would be able to place me with Swift no problem.
They gave me a day to attend the school and sent me a bus ticket. Upon receiving the bus ticket he called me back and said that I was not going to be able to attend because my license had not been held for one year yet. Still wanting to drive trucks very badly I decided to go ahead and wait until it was valid for the complete year. which at the time was only a couple months.
now as of January 24 it will be a complete year with no other tickets or infractions since that time. It was originally suspended for driving without a license. Why I didn't have a license some may ask well I have lived in Pennsylvania for 10 years and just never bothered getting one and never had one in a different state I know 42 years old and I've never had a license. So basically they took my license for not having a license for six months.
While here's another kicker I paid all the necessary fines and tickets that were issued to me as I thought and at the time the six months was up went to the DMV to get my license well there was a $25 fine that I had to pay that I knew nothing about so until that was paid the suspension did not go into affect so I paid it than and There and had to wait another six months.
Okay so now we are at a complete year of having a infraction free driving license the 24th of this month. Upon receiving your license back the state of Pennsylvania automatically put six points on my license with 1 point removed each year.
Other part of my story is a little more complicated but to make it simple and short. I lived in Florida for one year and in 1999 me and my roommate got into an argument he went to bed and I decided to go out. I was always able to use his car but when he woke up and saw his car missing he called it in stolen next thing you know I am being arrested for driving a stolen car even though I had the keys and was my roommates car and always had permission.
off to jail I went I got ahold of my roommate in that he assured me that he would go try to have the charges dropped while Florida being the state that it is I guess picked up the charges and he was unable to drop the charges not wanting to sit in jail having a job and needing to pay the bills I was told I could plea out on probation so I took that route.
I did probation for a couple months and a opportunity came up for a job in Pennsylvania hence why I'm here now I never completed the probation and seven years went by without ever having any problems or them contacting or finding me in sending me back to jail until the day I was pulled over without driving with a license.
a warrant came back for me from Florida I was sent back to Florida and had to do one year in jail to erase my debt for the probation and was considered a felon.
So now I have this felony and a suspended license on my record. As we all know and see throughout this form it is the recruiter's job for bodies into that school at this point my only options are to go through one of them type of schools with drivers choice or drivers solutions. I've looked at so many other options but do not meet the criteria to do those so I am stuck with that for now and want to drive so bad I'm willing to do it, you have to start somewhere.
my main concern is that they will get me to that school and make it as far as graduating with a CDL. at this point unfortunately it seems to be Swift or USA truck. Now I have been maintaining contact with these recruiters and have told my story and basically are told that they should be able to get me on with these companies.
my main concern is having not really worked while trying to still maintain the bills doing odd jobs in under the table stuff money is definitely an issue here so I would hate to get all the way to the school and even as far as completing it then doing the orientation and getting turned away because of my background in a perfect world I would think that before I was sent to school and gone through the testing got a CDL that that company that planned on hire me would know of my history and everything, but seeing other posts I've seen where people have gone through the school and then turned away for some reason or another once they get to the orientation.
if that was my case I would first be responsible for that tuition and that is money that I just do not have. Once again I apologize for the long story but I am trying to be upfront with everybody in here including these recruiters and of the companies and have too been told so many different answers so I thought I would throw it out there as complete as possible and see what you nice folks think.
this is something I really have my heart set on and don't plan on giving up but I just wish that these recruiters in schools and companies would be a little more upfront and honest with their policies.
I do not mind starting with a bottom of the barrel company if that is what I have to do everybody has to pay their dues and I am willing to do that.
any feedback or answers or advice or anything that you think of that might help me I would greatly appreciate it. am willing to give my phone number to anyone that might like to speak to me or help me through this.
once again I apologize for the length of this post and hope I did not overstep any bounds by asking so many questions and putting so much out there thank you in advance to anyone that might have some advice or even some words of having to sit through such a boring stranger's life story lol thanks.
Confused and stressed

My advice... Move forward. Research, ask/answer any and all questions. get your foot in A door and do your best. FORGET the past. Straight up.
-
Try to find a place that will be sure to let you in after training. Tell your recruiter that you're not going to school unless you can be guaranteed the job upon completion. Try to get something in writing. May not work, but it's all I can think of.

I agree....forget the past and start anew....get the answers you new t make good decisions....once you have your foot inside the door then things will progress for you....this is the future and trucking is a good career, but you have to live a different life than before....its a lifestyle...it was a great choice for me and I would not trade the experience I have learned otr for my previous life....good luck to you in your new career....be safe......... -
A suspension and a felony on your record is not good, but is still doable. Check with as many carriers as you can before you make a decision. You may just have to bite the bullet and put in a year with a not so great carrier but if you get a year OTR with a clean record it will open a lot more doors than are open now.

My husband has a felony charge that is ten years old.He currently works for Covenant and of course hates it.I wish we would have known of this site beforehand. My advice to you is think twice. His is ten years old and is having a problem getting a job anywhere else. The school promised him job placement but failed him.He got onto Covenant by himself.NOW I SEE WHY!!!!!

Thank you so much all for the responce. I'm trying to stay positive and this site has been A lifesaver
dolores did your husband go through one of the driver solutions or drivers choice schools or a independent.?
I'm just trying to start the rest of my life and now know I should have not jumped the gun on this venture without reserching and taking a recruiters word that I qulified and that guy doesn't even work for them anymore I can only imagine why.
So nervous they would get me through the school and then be no job but be responsible for that cost and more debt is not what I need .
I want to do this so bad so i'm not giving up to the very end i guess at this point I have to wait for the 24th when my licence is good for 1 year and call drivers choice back as the recruiter said for me to do. to try to get somthing stating I will have a job after I compleat the school
thank you once again all -
My husband went to Roadmaster in Jacksonville,Fl.They told him they would give him lifetime placement. He has tried to get in touch with for the past month 3-4 dfferent times. He hates working for Covenant. They still have not contacted him back.Just make sure you read the fine print. In very small writing on the financial agreement with the school it writes they cannot qaurentee jobplacement for people who have felony charges or drug convictions. They will not tell you that though. They tell you the oppisite until you graduate and stuck with a $200.00 payment.Like I said just be cautious and do not go to work for covenant.Always check the company out first here or rippoffreport.comGOODLUCK!!!!!
