A word of warning to you guys that run US 1 in North Central Md. Coming southbound on US 1,out of Cecil County,it's a steep short grade into a hard curve on to the top of the dam. Take your time,it's a narrow entrance either way on to the dam.
Bad fatal semi wreck this morning, driver south bound down the grade, out of control, crossed over the northbound lane, and through the cement barriers. Airborne over 80 feet all the way to the bottom of the face of the dam. RIP.

    THROUGH?!

    OMFG....

That dam withstood a whole river 10 to 20 feet over the entire top with gates and all open during Anges pending a demo yes or no.

Through one of those walls? OMG thats awesome bad... ugh.

Yes there is a drop down to the dam thing both ways. Harder from the east. Much.

I guess those trucks are good to the last drop eh? RIP driver. what a interesting death...

Would you like to rephrase that? You might think that's funny or clever or whatever but I bet nobody else over the age of five does.
A driver is dead. He deserves better than your childish sarcasm

I didn't think trucks were even allowed on that road.

They built that concrete to stop trucks a while back its not expected that big trucks will punch through or go over some of those walls on that particular dam. Coming from the east is a bad curve and drop which traps anyone going too fast onto the dam proper. Its very tricky down there.

VERY rarely do we have trucks crash at that curve so something else must have been in play. Very unfortunate.

Another thing about Conowingo is back in the day, my own parents were almost smashed by a big rig coming over the last drop eastbound when he topped the last big fall and there were my folks in their car. He got past them not by very much and at way excessive speed.

The next up and over would drop down straight into the dam itself by the powerhouse and its tight through there. Not something you want to be reckless or fool around with.

That is one dam that has influences virtually all of my life and continues to do so even today from early childhood there. No trucker who has everything is in order is expected to wreck or be killed on that dam unless a mistake is made or a distracting is big enough. Or even a second party involved accident. Its very unfortunate. But extremely rare that those walls will fail the way they did. Best case scenario both walls would have ping ponged him to a stop. But not that time. Physics were what they were and the driver died for it.

Finally as a parting thought, truckers do not always get to go home again they are killed once in a while. Whatever caused this one or any of them to lose their life is a wasteful tragedy but again, not all of us is going to make it.

This particular wreck is only one of two I know of in my 50+ years around that dam personally where drivers have been killed in that way. Which makes it really something. Even if my first post is terribly stupid and simple. This one should explain my position better. For better or worse.

The road there is somewhat restricted,no posted signs, but I've never got a definite answer from the State Police at the scales, which are just south of the dam. I was pulled into the scales there one afternoon with my 48' lowboy with my flip down. As soon as I was parked,I saw a cop coming out with a tape measure, figured I was in trouble for length. Seems they don't want trailers over 48' on that road. He said they always stop a out of state truck pulling 53's,as lots are up there on US 1 avoiding the toll on I 95. He told me the fine for avoidance of toll is $1100. He let me go,after I showed him my license, and that I don't live far from there, and was on my way home, not avoiding anything, just don't do it again, with the flip down.
The scale there is usually closed at night, but you never know, have seen them open at 4:00am.
Just not a real truck friendly road, esp. on the dam,and its approaches. If there's a semi coming the other way,it's very narrow, lots of broken mirrors. Just be real careful near the dam.

I cannot emphasize how tight that dam is on the two lane.

From what I understand the river has deposited enough sediment behind and piled up almost to the top (Bottom)of the dam gates. They will have to make a decision on blowing the thing up and allowing the river to clear it out in about 10 years or less give or take.

Look at you explaining away how youre still correct. You redefine the phrase "know it all" ...especially when you dont have a clue at all. The less you know the more you explain and embarass yourself even more.

I will help you with something you obviously dont know. Its that the mistake you made is in saying "good to the last drop." As if you can compare a mans life to a drip of coffee. Hes dead. His wife, kids, friends and parents will never see him again and will never forget that his last moments were absolute terror. And you took that moment, some fellow drivers horrible death, to try getting some likes by making some other stranger chuckle.

    SHAME ON YOU.

The correct response to being called out on it, that even my 8yr old could figure out, is "i am sorry."

No one needs to know about the dam. They need to know you can have some humility and actually shut up for just a moment.
