I've had my cdl class a license for over 10 yrs now working for the county only. Our trucks run automatic transmissions, but I want to find a way to practice more on a 10 speed manual. Ive driven one before but have not done it enough to build my confidence. I can drive a manual automobile, but I know thats not the same. The way schools are set up takes too long to get on the way of making a decent income. Im trying to find something local like fuel or petroleum or roll offs as I am tired of doing water main construction and being under paid. Where to get started is my main question. Every job Ive researched is wanting verifiable tractor trailer experience. Im used to the driving experience of pulling a 53 ft size rig hauling heavy equipment in local county area where we work, but once again they are mostly autos. I plan on getting my hazmat and tankers as well. I have a clean driving record also. Even if its dump trucking or something similar part time id take to get the practice. Just looking for a start to get involved in the industry. Ive been settling at low salary and have been underpaid too long. Its embarrassing but im just breaking $15 an hour and have been at the county for almost 13 years. Good benefits but those are at most good jobs. Im single no kids, not married and have everything to shoot for a better income 35 years old. I live in marietta ga , just north of atlanta metro area.
Considering a trucking job, already have CDL

Have you thought about hauling garbage? Check out republic services. Take it from me its a good good gig. I am not a recruiter in any way shape or form. The automatic restriction should not be a problem in most cases as they are mostly phased out. -
Millis has a terminal near Atlanta. They haul beer and paper everywhere east of the rocky's. But 99% east of the Mississippi.

Maybe check with a local farmer? Not sure what crops they grow down there, but here in the Midwest farmers are always looking for help this time of year hauling corn and beans. Just a thought.

Wow...13 years experience and only making $15 an hour?

Maybe switch from County to Federal working for USPS as a TTO (Tractor Trailer Operator). Government job, easy work, Union gig...but you'll have to put your dues as a PTF before turning full-time.BlueThunderr Thanks this. -
I've been driving since 2008 started at 25cpm, now 43cpm. So 10 more years I should be at 63cpm.

10 speeds are junk. Usually put in company trucks so you will be fine

If you want to do a roll off go to Marietta Recycling. They dont have a lot of benefits, but they have insurance, vacation, paid holidays. Their roll offs are autos, but you can work your way into a tractor trailer. -
Sadly 15 a hour does not bring in what it should.
That's a starting rate of a concrete jobber in J'Boro and it's still not sufficient. Rent would eat most of it up.
