Haven't seen a lot posts from guys in my situation so here goes...
I have 8 years experience. Drove OTR and dedicated before ending up in LTL.
When the economy took a nosedive and I saw my LTL gig getting ready to disappear, I left trucking for an office job. Have been out of the industry for nearly 3 years now.
I'm looking into heading to Prime as a lease driver.
My question is how do they typically handle weening someone such as myself back into a truck? I'm sure it's not as easy and come out of orientation and just sign the contract
What can I expect?
Considering getting back into trucking

3 years off the road means they'll want you to take a refresher course. You should give recruiting a call to confirm this.
-
Hollierider, where is home? May be better options?
-
regardless with whom you go to work for, You will most likely have to go out with a trainer for at least a couple of weeks.
-
Yes, he may need a refresher and training again. But choice of prime is what I was getting at.
NutDriver Thanks this. -
So tell us sdaniel... exactly WHAT are you getting at?
-
You can not figure it out? Ok prime is not a perfect fit for everybody. Nor is any company right for 100% of all people. There are people who want more hometime, or more pay, or both? Asking someone to consider all options. Is BAD?

Yall should form your own group....
Going out with a trainer for however long they want you to would be a good idea. See how Prime does things and learn the trucks we operate.Hollerider Thanks this. -
Spoke with a recruiter. Said probably 40,000mi of training before being released. Seems a little excessive but not a deal breaker.
My eventual goal is getting my own authority and buying a truck. Prime's deal appears to be a good way to get a feel for this in a more "controlled" environment. From my perspective at least. -
That may change - a lot of the training program is up to when your trainer and FM decide you're ready to upgrade. I imagine the recruiter went "long" so they aren't too low on that estimate.
I suggest folks run on the company side after training, to get an idea of how the company fits them, and to get their "game" on. You have to be able to drive the truck economically to make money at Prime. It's also quite easy to jump to the lease side, but very hard to go back if you don't have a track record and a FM who is willing to take you back. It's also a good period to evaluate an exemplar copy of the lease (so you know what's in there,) and run a "shadow company" on your loads to see if you can make it work before you sign that lease. Here's a thread with some more information...
