Do they or do they not start you off with automatics?

If your mentor has an automatic you will likely have one. The industry is moving towards automatics to save the mpg. It is good to know how to drive a manual so you can get a better job elsewhere.

No, the clutch has absolutely nothing to do with the fact that semi-truck transmissions are unsynchronized. An unsynchronized transmission, simply put, is a transmission that does not contain synchronizers. Car/light truck transmissions have synchronizers in them, big rig transmissions do not (even automated manual transmissions are unsynchronized, like the DT12 Detroit transmission and the Eaton Fuller UltraShift).

OP, like stated by many others, I would definitely rekindle your skills with a manual transmission. I agree that you should make yourself more valuable by having those skills. I've seen so many new drivers, who when I tell them my truck is a 13 speed, look at me like I am from NASA and talking about how space shuttles work.

Don't be one of those people. lol

Plus, you may find that you enjoy manual transmissions more than automated manual transmissions. I personally would never be found in a truck that has an automatic or automated manual transmission. No way. Takes the fun out of trucking IMHO.

    Wooly Rhino Thanks this.
