Thank you guys for the wealth of information found here.
I'm looking to get my CDL from a local community college and drive part time. The reason I want to drive part time is because I have a good job that I work Mon-Thurs. My current job pays about $1000 a week with benefits. The problem is after I pay taxes, rent,, bills health insurance and $1400 child support, I find myself broke every month. I decided I needed to change this situation.
My question is:
1. Are there companys that hire part time cdl drivers?
2. Given that I already make $1000 a week, would it be foolish of me to quit my job and do trucking full time? My current job is honestly as stress free as it can get and offer full benefits.
3. Would you advise me to stay away from trucking altogether and seek other kind of part employment.
4. A buddy of mine is in Odessa tx and he is encouraging me to take the leap. He said there is potential to make $2500-3500 hauling sand. He works for o/o and they split 50/50. I'm tempted to join him.
I'm not scared of hard work and don't mind OTR.
What do y'all think?
Thank you

What he said. However, you can have a million bucks in the bank within five years of trucking that is if you start with two million.

One thing to think about. I knew of a divorced woman. Doing good with new husband and what ex had to pay her.
One day she decided to haul her ex back into court for more money. He was making more. So the court forced him to pay more.
As I understand those oil field jobs. Great pay. But not without stress.Keepleft Thanks this. -
Part time trucking is not easy to find. They don't just have a $160,000 truck sitting around park for free waiting to be used. They need to run them to pay for them. Once your in the truck they keep you working. Unless it's slip seating with another driver. Two driver run the same truck. Maybe one drivers works 4 days and goes home and the other driver come in and drive the other 4 days.
Maybe you can do it part time in oil field trucking but in regular trucking is not easy to find a job like that.Keepleft, austinmike and Just passing by Thank this. -
Thanks guys for your inputs. The stress of bearly having ends meet is wearing hard on me. I'm weighing my options to see how I can make more money to provide adequately for my family. Just figured truckingt part time would help bring in much needed cash. I'm sure you guys can understand this.

You're buddy that hauls sand; does he work on 1099 or W-2?
Does he have benefits?
As for part time work; there are temp services that hire cdl drivers and you can work when you want to.
Where is your location? We need to know the hiring area you live in.Last edited: Mar 28, 2018

Online miles 24,701
Revenue . $19,828
Fees and taxes $ 8,034
Net pay. $11,795
Keep in mind these are city miles and he sometimes worked 8 hour days. For this amount of work and time, not accounting for wear and tear on personal vehicle, I think trucking is far superior to Uber. No question.Just passing by Thanks this. -
