I have some questions related to container haulage (I am not from trucking industry):
a) Does shipping line provide tri-axle chasis for hauling 20'/40' over-the-standard-limit (with permit) container?
b) Otherwise, what is generic rate (per day) at Norfolk, VA and Charleston, SC for tri-axle chasis?
c) About 150 miles is one way for container haul to Norfolk, VA - Is it better to post on some load boards (if so on which one)?
d) How much time it takes to get permit for over-the-standard-weight? Who gets it trucking company or shipper?
e) Would rate for container hauling (for export or import) be different or the same?
f) Is there a place to see online standard rates (+/- 5% variation)?

I haul containers out of Norfolk every day. Yes there are some 20' tri-axle chassis available, but they're usually in use so getting one might be a problem. If a tri-axle 40' is required, you'll have to contact a carrier that has some. There aren't any shipline chassis. VIM (Virginia Intermodal Management) charges $20/day for chassis rentals, billed to the carriers who then bill the customer. As far as permits, all the carriers I know of, including the thieves I'm leased to, are permitted for 90k pounds. Expect to pay around $100 excess weight charges if your load is that heavy. Rate should be the same whether it's an import or export. Unfortunately there isn't any place to see what a "standard" rate would be. My suggestion would be to call some companies for quotes. Also if you know anyone who does any international shipping, call them and see what they're paying. Remember, when you're quoted a rate, it is going to be for a round trip, load out/empty back because the cans have to be returned to the pier. The shiplines also have per diem charges for having cans out for excessive time, and demurrage charges for cans sitting on the pier too long after they have been released for hauling.
Hope this helps a little. -
hopefully you wont have equip perdiem, storage and & demurrage to deal with. Intermodal was a headache to me.
