Thinking of buying a 2014 Cascadia with a DD15 out of Summit Truck Group in Joplin Missouri. It is ex fleet but has only 400,000 miles on it. The factory warranty is good until late May 2019. Then an extension 2 year warranty is available. Unfortunately this unit doesn't have an APU which means that it has had the snot idled out of it. No external oil filtration so it is probably pretty sooty. I would have to take care of that. I can have my APU swapped for $4,000. $63,000 plus the APU cost and a trip to Joplin in my car from Tupelo. Buying a used or even a new truck is always a case of Russian roulette. All it takes is one bullet to kill you. However I don't have much choice right now and I am trying to look on the bright side. Anybody have any thoughts or experience they can advise me with?? All I know is my Century and that DD60. with the horrible electric over air Meritor tranny. Thoughts??
Get the rigdig report Check tires Research dd15 engine issues for that year Do a dyno test Get maintenance records if you can
He already has the APU. Check the hours, not all were set to idle at will and were run accordingly. The DD didn't need external oil filtration from what I understand, either. I ran a 2014 while my regular truck was in the body shop, it ran better than the 2013, which has been better than the 2012, and so on, back to pre SCR engines.
My advice is if you know a good mechanic and seller don't mind I would remove valve covers and inspect cam lobes for scaring and cleanliness of inner parts. These "fleet" trucks are some of the worst maintained trucks out there. Long oil change intervals on these exhaust gas recirculation engines especially , does alot of damage. On you-tube there is a guy named, think Rawze or Raze collections. Not saying he knows everything, but I'm sure it will give you good info as he opens up different engines and inspects them. Hate to see somone buy a great looking truck to find out it has a junk engine. 30,000 to 50,000 miles between oil changes and lube is too long in my opinion. Good luck. Oh, and if seller don't want you opening it up..walk away. If it has fresh oil a sample won't tell you much till you or someone has run it at least 5,000 miles .
