The WIA will replenish their funding, annually, by July, 07 2010. If you are a resident of SC, by then, you could apply for the program. However, testing for your CDL in NC is less demanding than a SC CDL.
I think that the WIA program in NC is much slower than SC. Plus, when funding is down, it usually effects the region, meaning most of the SE.
It is well worth the wait to get the funding straight.
It is unfortunate that the class will start prior to the funding. In this case, you could pick a school from the list of providers that WIA Reps have at York Tech.
Keep us posted as to your progress![]()

Why would the CDL testing in SC be any different than NC?
-and-
I am supposed to call Drivers Solutions today at 1:30 to keep that ball rolling....should I make that phone call or work the WIA angle first?Last edited by a moderator: May 26, 2010
The Challenger and kickin chicken Thank this. -
WIA angle!!!!! Driver's Solutions, where are they located?
When you graduate you can pick and choose which company you wish to work for.
There are many good companies that you would not have to sign contracts with. Plus local opportunities,Pepsi, Coke and US Foods have good paying local runs...
The CDL testing in NC you have to park the trailer into a 45 degree angle as opposed to SC's 90. The pre trip in NC, you point at the component, in SC your must get you hand on it.
After proper training you would be able to do these things regardless.SCNewbie Thanks this. -
I will forgo the call to them. Not just for the reasons you mentioned, but mainly because I am still so early in this process to pull the trigger without getting all of options in line.kickin chicken Thanks this. -
To obtain the pre hires that the WIA program will want for you, you can get a head start to all of this.
Get a copy of your 10 year MVR. If your MVR is good, then you will not have any problems getting pre hires.
Get a CDL manual and start studying for your permit. Use the crist website to help with your studies. The test is only $15.00, plus the cost of the permit. You would get 3 chances to pass the permit test. The first week of classes are devoted to getting you your permit. You could get behind the wheel, for training, faster, since you have your permit. -
10 MVR- I have lived in SC, NC and IL during this 10 year time period. Do I need to contact all three states for this record or will SC be able to go back the full 10 years?
On the pre-hire stuff you were referring to, are you saying I should still work on this at this point(i.e. still work with Driver Solutions)
And thanks for the Crist website info, already working on this.
You rock Kickin Chicken! Thanks for all of your help, I hope you are getting paid well!kickin chicken Thanks this. -
The Department of Motor Vehicles will be able to pull the records that you need.
The pre hires are ONLY for your WIA case worker. Do not go the driver solution way. You don't need their services.
You are welcome for the information, that is what we do here, try to help one another.SCNewbie Thanks this. -

For anyone following this thread, I didn't call Drivers Solutions back, they ended up calling me. I told my contact about where I was in this process(2 weeks removed from a job and gathering my options) and she was very receptive to this. It was funny how when I mentioned this site, her reaction was "a place where people can go and bash trucking companies". I told her that does in fact take place, but my experiences on here have been nothing but positive.
Anyways, my application with them is on hold for 90 days, and I am free to contact them again to move forward with their proposed plan at anytime during this time. -
SCnewbie, what is their, "proposed plan"?
