Conway Dockworker/Driver Apprentice

I worked in the Denver Terminal for a very short time. They would expect you to wait around the house all day and then call you at 10 pm to work all night at the dock then call you at 5 am the next day to drive. you stay up all day and work all night then you try to out guess them by staying up all night and they want you to drive or work the dock all day. Then they would get upset because you were not rested enough to unload 10 trucks quick enough that night. They pay very well but you won't see a driving position for a while and you will have a hard time trying to get any sort of schedule for your life. Alot of their freight is loaded very poorly, (lots of heavy floor loads) and the senior guys usually wouldn't give up there forklift when you needed it the most. I am 45 also and I was 5 years younger when I worked for them and it nearly killed me! Hope this helped I am not down on them really but I think they expect a lot and they are very proud of themselves!

 

I got a callback from Conway a few weeks ago about their program out of the Des Plaines, IL (NW Chicago) terminal. You had to have all your permits and stuff ready to go (CDL Learners, HAZMAT Fingerprinting started, doubles and triples) and then you get to work the dock PT and train PT. I've heard many drivers say that the training you'll get is really good, and other people like to see trained by Conway on your resume. Not sure if it's the truth or not though.

Averitt is opening a terminal nearby. Have an interview for a dockworker position there, pay is okay and it'll give me a chance to decide if I want to continue the path I'm going with transportation.
