Hello everyone, I'm in a horrible position right now. In august I noticed Conway Freight was hiring for their driver training program. I had a fairly good job at FedEx Express though they're kind of going downhill in my opinion, but pay and benefits weren't bad. I got the job with Conway and was very excited about it the people and the atmosphere are great and man do they feed us! However business died off since they raised prices. So much so that I've been working the dock struggling to get 20 hrs a week. Financially this is terrible and I was willing to hold on, the light at the end of the tunnel being a driver eventually. Just when things couldn't get worse they canceled my class. Management can't give me a straight answer whether there will be one or not in the future. Either they honestly don't know or are playing games neither of which really matters. Rumor flying around is they may have a class in spring, but all this is part of the major move to separate dock workers from drivers. Was wondering if anyone else from Conway knows anything, should I stick it out? I,m trying to get a second job but my boss kind of gave me the "well if we need to call you in early" deal. In my mind is they want me to be fully available for 20hrs a week which is garbage. Even worse I already have my permit with double/triples, tanker and hazmat, my question is should I slug it out cross my fingers or are there any other LTL companies that will train? I really am trying to dodge going OTR. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated thanks.......
Conway Freight help please!!

That's the con-way. They want you to be their beck and call 24/5, to work 4 hours and then go home. Been there, done that.I suggest you try to get your cdl on your own, otherwise if you quit fter getting it at con-way you'll have to pay the money back. If you are already at the top of the seniority list, then life wont be too bad, but if you are extraboard and at the bottom, things will only get worse. Con-way is planning on hiring temps to replace drivers on the dock. I suggest you get your cdl and go apply at Old Dominion. What part of the country are you in by the way?

One driver posted he was just hired by Old Dominion right out of CDL school which is unusual, so try there.

Conway is hiring temps to replace drivers on the docks. I worked there for 3 months. Wanted to get in their driver program, but after talking to current and former drivers. Not impressed. If you have all your endorsements already, i would look at other LTL companies, Plus if you get into their program, you will be trained "the ConWay" way to drive. All your current endorsements will be tossed.

I heard they are canceling the driver training program. Dock workers will be a full time position starting in Jan. I would look at your paperwork that you signed since they give you a written job offer. If it states you are to get your license thru them as part of your employment , i would hold them to it.

I applied for the school a few years ago. Lucky for me I had already had my license so they waived the contract to pay them back. I went through the class and afterwards I never got work. I had two below me in class and during that time they hired two experienced guys and they bumped us... After getting fed up I left. Actually we all left around the same time. Get your license on your own then apply to Old D, ABF or YRC. All three offer training courses although ABF your locked into a two year contract. YRC I'm not too familiar with their class, but even with some issues they got going on they are still good to work for. Now for old D's class I know nothing about. I do know they are good to work for but there's no overtime until after 60

Wow, how many years did it take this companies to realize that it's "cheaper" paying $13/hr for a temp worker than paying 23/hr to a DRIVER to work the dock?
CenutryClass Thanks this. -
Don't give them ideas... The drivers will lose hours for shorter runs. We got a few part-timers at my barn at UPSF but everyone's working

Feel free to search my thread about my experience at con way and I think you'll get an accurate idea of what getting " conned " is all about .
