So I went in this morning for the road test at CWF a little nervous as I've never driven trucks in the city before. Showed up at 7a but there was one guy ahead of me who had to test as well. So I sat there nervous as hell for a hour reading all the posters on the wall and going over the pre trip.

8ish rolls around and its my time to go, so I'm like this is it, here we go. make small talk with the tester till we get to the truck, then I just went into the zone.

Got in, checked what i needed to and rolled out the gate. Guy gave pretty good instructions on what he wanted me to do ahead of time, so I just took it slow, scanned my mirrors every couple seconds and focused on hazards ahead. NYC is tough i tell ya.
Man them 7 speeds are a #####, but I got the double clutching down and got hung up for like a second, but just shifted to the next gear up and was golden. Made all turns perfect, did a slow enough speed and just kept on trucking.
On the way back on the BQE(Brooklyn Queens expressway), a Weenie(Werner) truck stopped in the right lane around a bend as he thought he was going to hit the overpass. NY needs to quit this 1 ft lower than actual clearance deal. Had to hit the brakes as there were a couple guys behind him. Luckily I was doing a decent speed so I stopped in time. Made it back to the terminal without incident.

Time to back it into the spot I took it from, so I pulled up along, scanned and got ready to put it in the hole. I check my mirrors and was like ####, this badboy aint straight, so I pulled up got it straight and started back. Used a half a pull up as I cut it too soon, and the next run back had it in perfect. Those wheels are so soft and easy to turn compared to that POS Classic XL I drove in school. Halfway into the hole, i stopped and asked the guy if I could G.O.A.L and he started smiling and seemed pretty impressed with that. Knew i had enough room, but I did anyway.

So all in all I think I did a good job, so now just waiting to hear back from the personnel manager. That other guy worked for CWF a few years ago, but I think they need a few drivers. So we shall see. Wish me luck.

good luck man, yea those pups can be tricky, i had a 48footer on friday, havent driven one since my state roadtest but i quickly got it again. the linehaul units r a bit easier to float through gears than the city units. city units take a lil more time and practice where as the road unit i an float through every gear no problem

Well just got an email from Mr G, back there Thursday afternoon. :)

Things are looking good at this point.

And the last time I backed a pup, it did not go over well at all. This time I just backed slow, very minor wheel corrections and it went right where I want it. Id take a 48 or 53 any day though

some of our pups have a liftgate on the trailer(newer ones) they r even trickier due to the fact the wheel is a bit closer and has a lip out. we do have plenty of 48s and 2 53s, one has barn doors on it so it gets annoying i assume. yea thats good, if mr g does that then ur set. he normally called me though to come in, ive only gotten like 2 emails from him. how big is brooklyn, my terminal is only 60 doors.

wen u do linehaul, newark has like 90, carlstadt has 110(i no brooklyn goes there cuz i no someone there from linehaul, but cant remember his name), milton has 205 doors i believe, and hagerstown has about 165 to the building we go to, theres too of them, the other i believe has 150, jakebrake would no better than me. that hagerstown run for us is nice, so is milton, carlstadt and newark r short(even shorter for u in brooklyn) most of ur time u will be spent working the dock, unless u get some vias(bring a trailer to a diff terminal)

Hows it working out for you man?
First day of p&D tomorrow on my own. Said this week should be pretty busy freight wise.
I had fun a t carlstadt doing linehaul...its just so wild to see 60-70 forklifts just running wild into and out of the trailers..blew my mind.

And you were right, that supervisor Mike in sector 1 @ Carlstadt is super cool.

Hoping freight picks up for you man

We only have 7 guys on linehaul and only two that run to Carlstadt...

It was slow for us today so I didnt go out...cleanedup the dock as the Vp is coming tomorrow. Managed to get 8 hrs so I wont complain..but i didnt apply to clean docks, but im gonna hold tight for a bit, as a few guys quit since I got hired..

SO what are your plans after your two weeks?

we have 8 guys usually for linehaul.

I remember when the terminal manager was coming back from vacation they had me and my friend who was also in the apprentice class help organize the dock a bit. it was the last day of our program and the instructor was taking the 3rd guy out for the final test. I got a full 8 in too then. If u r gettin 8 hours in thats good at least, i was gettin that a week if lucky. I gave it about a month and it never changed only cuz my terminal overhired, im not sure how urs is. they also told me they were cuttin overtime out to keep profits up and everyone working

im goin back to bartending for the mean time, or helping my friend as a help on his fedex routes, he owns 5 and i no 2 of them by heart since i used to do those before he took them over wen my boss left. He said hed use me as a fill in for a while

Sat out my first day yesterday, got all the way there then I get a text saying they dont need me..And they are still hiring, which is what beats me..I dont get it. You have guys sitting at home but still hiring new people. I can tell they dont want any overtime, because as soon as I hit the 7.5hr mark, theyre rushing me to get off the dock..lol. We have a night female FOS and I dont like her very much, but I'm gonna hang tight for a few more weeks, and if not I'm bailing too.

This flex stuff kills your day. I wake up @ 630 and call in for them to tell me to call back at 10, then to come in at one..And if they suddenly dont need you, half your day is wasted and you cant find another part time job as there is no schedule..I guess this is what being at the bottom again feels like...fml
