This move should be good for the drivers, depending on how things like benefits go.
CFI and Con-Way have been working together in this aspect for quite a while now, this merger just makes the operations more simple to run. -
well first of all. con-way has a problem. they want to sell customers on truckload services. yet they do not have enough teams to pull the freight. they have way more trailers than they do drivers. if a customer calls for a truckload pick-up at 7 or 8pm, the con-way truckload service department is already closed. so this forces the termial manager of a service center to make the pick-up, but then divide the shipment up to fit into 2 28 foot pups. it's simple, the freight is there for us, but we just don't have the drivers to support it. plain and simple, conway just needed drivers. con-way will be getting more frieght and more revenue, but i think the cfi drivers will benefit more......more miles.......less time at home......more money. as a con-way driver myself, i thought, hows does this affect me and my terminal? it doesn't. it just makes con-way, as a whole, more reliable in ontime delivery. personally, i don't think anybody has anything to worry about. well, except for the account exec's at con-way truckload that just got booted for trying to sell a product they can't deliver on. but thats about it.

BTW, what will Con-Way be doing with the drivers who do not have Haz-Mat endorsements? And, the drivers without doubles endorsement? And, long time drivers who have 100+ days off banked up ??????
I feel a massive lay off, or alienation of drivers coming on. Either way, there will be a lose of drivers. -
well drivers with out hazmat will be REQUIRED to have the endorsement. a lot of cfi drivers will find themselves "stranded" at a con way yard. mainly because a load will not be ready until 5am-7am. if you are a cfi driver, make friends with your dispatcher and have him run you from LA to no farther than oklahoma. those of you younger drivers lookin for the LA to newyork runs ( more miles ) need to know that gettin outa the new england states is hard. mainly because they are not that heavy of a freight lane. california to everywhere else is good. but good luck gettin back to cali.

Look for the headlines to read CFI/Con-Way issue pink slips to 100's of drivers....in the next couple of weeks. Venturing a guess, (based on past employment with CFI) I would say that 30% or more of CFI drivers do not have Haz-Mat. I kept mine, but I no longer work for the clowns. But this does answer a question that was on my mind....why they keep calling me "Just to let you know, you can have your job back if you want it." They are obviously going to need drivers with XT endorsements to cover their butts. :smt046
Sitting until 5am...is the norm for any CFI hauling Con-Way freight....nothing new there. -
The HazMat endorsements (or lack thereof) will probably be a problem since Con-way Freight transports a lot of HM.
In regard to the doubles endorsement, I doubt if that will mean much. The Truckload division was originally set up over two years ago to replace the outside contractors hauling the long haul "continental" or coast to coast freight. Con-way Truckload has always run 53" dry vans. It is Con-way Freight (the parent company) which runs the doubles which are used mostly to collect and distribute regional/local freight.
The reason reason for this buyout/merger/deal is that the Truckload division was originally envisioned to grow very quickly. It was supposed to take over for ALL the outside contractors hauling Con-way freight over the span of 5-6 years, growing from a handful of trucks to several thousand.
Didn't happen, largely, IMHO, because they simply couldn't recruit and keep drivers... -
Hey all,
I just about done with my training and will be getting my license next week. I've talked to a CFI recruiter and got a lot of good information. Just wondering if now that the merger has happened if this is a still a good place to start? I already have all my endorsements and my hazmat background cleared. Basically the recruiter told me to give them a call when I have my CDL in my hands and they will give me an orientation date. Should I go for it? I'm pre-hired right now with Stevens, Werner and US Express but am not really liking what I'm reading about them on here. Gordon is also another option I have....I live on the I5 corridor in Northern CA....
Also, did CFI adopt the no smoking on the rigs/property rule from Con-Way?
Appreciate the advice.... -

Curious to if all the folks with all the negative comments still stand by them regarding the buyout of CFI from Con-way Truckload. Especially since most of what was written was B.S.
