Designated trailer babysitter today -- touched 3 & been to the shop 3 times... Wierd how it goes in spurts. Currently getting a broken tandem slider & 3 leaking hub seals fixed. Come to think of it, I think I've had to get new hub seals on every meritor auto-inflate dual trailer I've moved -- thankfully we only have a handful of them in the fleet.

    Northwest HOS Blitz

The law enforcement agencies from three states in the Pacific Northwest are partnering with British Columbia for an enforcement blitz that is targeting commercial truck drivers who are running over their allowed hours of service.

Officers from Washington, Oregon, and Idaho will “conduct roving patrols to inspect trucks and drivers who attempt to avoid the inspection sites by traveling on bypass routes.” In addition they will be opening every single weigh station and leaving them open “as staffing allows.”

Thankfully I'm on my 30 minute break, to the minute on e logs.
Otherwise I wouldn't know which log book to hand them.

Just a question for you Con-Way folks. Why does Con-Way Freight pay so much more and have better benefits than Con-Way truckload? Aren't they the same company? I only ask because it seems confusing to me. I mean, you all do the same thing. Pick up a load and deliver it. I ask because that is what a Con-Way freight told me today. I guess I don't get it?

    Nope.
They are run as four different companies.
Freight, Truckload, Menlo, and Road Systems
    Its a big enterprise.

Freight is a different division than truckload. LTL carriers (UPS, Fed Ex, Old Dominion, Arkansas' Best, Saia, Oak Harbor, Yellow/USF, etc) have historically been union with very good benefits so even the non-union companies had to offer competitive benefit packages. Since ltl drivers spend a lot of time working docks, doing multiple deliveries (unloading their own freight) they are usually paid hourly or a combination of hourly & mileage.

OTR companies are paid mileage and as long as we have decent length of hauls, it works out well. I've talked to freight guys who don't make as much as I do and wanted to switch to truckload. And I've talked to plenty of truckload guys who wanted to switch to freight. The grass always seems greener...
