Hello all I am looking for advice. If you were a student and had pre-hires from these 2 companies which one would you choose and why? Thanks for your time to look at this thread.

Millis only hires students that go through there school or already have one year experience. If you want to run out west you would probally be better off going with conway as millis doesn't go much further than I35.

I have not worked for either, but if I had to choose, it would be Con-Way. I believe Con-Way has a better freight base and would keep you moving. I see many more CFI trucks on the road than Millis. I am not saying Millis is not a good company, I don't know that, but the name of the game is make a living. That is done through driving and Con-Way has more trucks moving down the road.

I know you didn't ask for this but:

Schneider would also be a consideration. I had a pre-hire with them by filling out an application through their website. I had 7 pre-hires overall. I do work there and we have a huge freight base. I can't say I am 100% happy, but I am satisfied and from what I have read in this forum, it could be a lot worse else where. They have a lot fewer complaints than many of the other starter companies. I am always researching other companies to keep my options open, but I don't plan on going to another company anytime soon. That is just my extra opinion and is worth what you paid for it.

What kind of miles are you getting at Schneider? Also how are they about hometime? What kind of things aren't you happy about if you don't mind me asking.

Well, as a new driver, my miles were not immediately more than 2000 a week. Part of that was my fault as the beginning learning curve is steep. You have to develop time management differently than is needed in other occupations. It takes time for remembering which macros to send to become second nature. As well as customer names on signs are not always the same as your assignment. These are not Schneider things, but industry things. My miles steadily increased as I became more efficient. By the second month I was getting about 2300 miles per week. I never had to wait more than two hours for my next assignment. I have heard other companies making drivers wait more than a day or two.

I started on the regional program, so the miles are lower there than if you stay out two or three weeks. There is trade offs for being home more often - mostly less miles in exchange for being with my family every week. I am now on a dedicated team account so my miles are different than what you would experience on a regional account. Our miles average 6400/week. I am gone for six days and home for two. This account is only available in my area so it is hard to compare what it is like on a regional account with what I do specifically. I did start regionally and can comment on that. The starting pay is a little low with Schneider compared to some of my other pre-hires, but I had heard the miles were there more than with some other companies so in reality, the pay is more on the check, but less on the mile.

Something I am not happy with with Schneider is that they still pay on short miles versus practical miles. That causes you to drive about 6 - 10% more than what you are paid. Schneider is not the only one to do that, but many companies, I believe Con-Way is one, are getting away from the short miles. The short miles can cause you to be up to 10% out of route, whereas your quarterly bonus out of route needs to be under 6% in order to receive the bonus. I did get my bonus this last quarter, but I do not like the 4% difference between the actual and your bonus. I hope you understand what I am talking about.

The other small grievances fall more to my first DBL (freight manager/dispatcher) more than Schneider as a company. You would most likely have someone different.

Conway is a good all around company. If your looking for good benefits, retirement, 401k ,bonuses etc. Conway is the way to go. I have info on millis but I have worked for Conway before as a local p&d driver.

Let me correct that a bit. If a Con-Way Truckload driver wants to move over to Con-Way Freight, they have to have been with the truckload division for 3 years. Someone off the street can be hired for the freight divison, but a current CW Truckload employee has to wait until they've been there for 3 years. How messed up is that? The other option is quitting truckload and applying for freight.

Wow I never new that but fedex is the same way if u want to go to fedex express from freight, you would have to apply for the position and quit freight.
