Mine was leaking out overflow tube. It is positioned to run out of itself. I ran it upwards immediately and then down and around. Haven't used any antifreeze since. We have ten trucks with same issue. 2 were radiators the rest were overflow tube in a crappy place
Coolant pushed through overflow reservoir (ser 60-14L- DDEC-5)

I have an isx that I have to put on a new pressure cap every 6 months.
Also, I put in a new egr valve and for a few days after it overflowed a lot.
It's been good for a couple of months now
I know this isn't answering OP's original question, but may be helpful for others. -
I am learning new things every time. Detroit Diesel are probably wright, but they charge way to much for labor. They asked me for basic overhaul $14 000, this is without new injectors or turbo. I found a local mechanic, who is going to do it for $8500. Tomorrow, I am towing my truck to the other shop.
This problem with the overflow is typical for ser 60 Detroit on 900k miles. The cylinder liners are sunk in the block and the head gasket can not seal anymore. Compression goes in to the coolant, motor is running hot and getting worst every month.

I went thru this weeks ago. Please follow.
1. Complete Truck Srvs., Wytheville VA.
- You are loosing coolant either from a cracked EGR cooler or a leaking head gasket. we are not equipped. (Towing and minor repairs).
2. Triad Freightliner. Greensboro NC.
- You have a internal leak in the expansion tank. Tank and coolant replaced.
Truck released. Drove home. Next morning coolant down a gallon. Return to shop.
3. Triad Freightliner. Greensboro NC
- We are so sorry, found loose clamp and bad hose. Only charged for parts. Labor is on the house. Truck released. Hauled a couple loads. Adding 1/2 gallon coolant every day.
4. Virginia Truck Center, Freightliner Dealer. Roanoke VA.
- Pulled head as requested by customer. found leak between 5 and 6 and about to leak between 1 and 2. You are very lucky no damage to piston sleeves but the head is etched and needs replaced. $7061.00 -

The coolant was new Detroit Diesel long life, new coolant filter, new overflow cap. My question is: How you measure the cylinder liners, if they are sunk? Detroit manual says: Heights of the cylinder sleeve measured with the sled gauge in 3 points no more than 0.003 inch. Between neighboring cylinders, not more than 0.002 inch.
So what is considered sunk cylinder liner?
W.W.Williams aka Detroit Diesel, said sunk cylinder liners, but they never show me any measurements, so I am getting suspicious. It could be only bad head gasket, but they have interest to inflate the bill.
On the other hand on 800k engine, once opened is good idea to go ahead and make the overhaul, but no body likes to listen to a false statements.Last edited: Jul 26, 2015

the liner protrusion must be -0.0127-0.0762 mm (-0.0005-0.003 in). if it is less then -0.0127-0.0762 mm (-0.0005-0.003 in) you have sunk cylinder .Last edited: Jul 26, 2015

Just found the same file searching the net. Now I understand. But I don't have the tool to measure. Probably I could ask W.W.Williams to measure while I am in their shop...but it is to late now. The truck is in another shop and the kit for overhaul is paid and delivered.

Hey mhyn, I see you are in California, close to me. Do you know any good shops doing overhauls on Detroit? Because, the shop my truck is in now - is very busy and could take a long time. It could be better just to tow the truck to CA. The reason I am asking is because, the best price on inframe kit for original detroit kit was in Santa Fe Springs, CA, so maybe the best mechanics with reasonable prices will be there too...
