My Scania engines have a plastic surge tank as a coolant reservoir, but the darn things don't last, they break and disintegrate, the plastic breaks down. My freightliner FLD120 has a metal surge tank over the rad and I'm thinking about buying some and adapting them to the scania setup. Before I do, I was wondering what else might be available.
The freightliner tank is as long as the rad, about 3-4" thick and 8-10" wide (going by memory). Was wondering if any other manufacturers tanks KW, Western Star, Etc. would be available in metal and 1/2 as long as a typical Rad and maybe 8-10" deep and 8-10" wide. If it held about 10-15L that would be good.
PS, the surge tank is pressurized, I think about 9lbs (my memory again).
Coolant surge tanks, anyone know?

I think mine break because I'm mostly off road, vibration is high and temp low -20C to -40C.
What's the rough size of the tank on yours (guess is good enough). I'll try and search it and see how the plastic casting compares to the Scania. -
First plastic tank on my '03 Mack started to leak and was replaced, but the 2nd one has held up for quite a while. Looks like one circular piece but it is actually 2 tanks (2 half-circles mounted together); the pressure cap is on the top tank.
Don't know if that helps...nice that FL stuff holds up so well.
Durn cold where you operate, too; my tank would leak thereas well!Last edited: Oct 6, 2012

The filler neck, you can buy, and a decent tin smith can fabricate one up for you out of brass, I do not know how galvanised steel would hold up, in the cooling system.
The shop would need the old tank, as a pattern.

Check into a used one from a T2000 KW. Metal, and about half as long as what you describe.

Prob should have mentioned this is remote-mounted on the firewall, not on/at the radiator.Last edited: Oct 6, 2012
