Hey guys... Quick background .....me: 33, clean driving record, will graduate trucking school mid December, was a Diesel Tech prior, strong work history, (one negative: had a non-cdl suspension that ended 9/2010,old child support, case now closed).... my brother: 25, strong work history, graduated same school in May, been teaming with Bowman since so will have over 6 months when I graduate.

The original plan was for me to go to Bowman and land in a truck with him and hit the road... I have serious concerns about this as they are not giving him a guarantee like they do for solo drivers and this doesn't make much sense to me. It'd be one thing if they were giving them the miles to run but every week he is sitting somewhere wondering when he can either drop or where the next load will be. yeah they get him home every weekend but I cannot see being gone from my family a week at a time for $4-500 paychecks a week.

So here's my questions... any advice on making this work at a new company? ie; someone to hire us both, pretty much at the same time, me; fresh out of school and him with 6 months in, and get us rolling??? I would really be interested in Werner or Con-way but am open to suggestions. Our main concerns are keeping it rolling, or having a decent gaurantee, getting home to the eastern panhandle of West Virginia a few times a month and possibly, hopefully a place that would allow a move for both of our families out west... possibly colorado or Idaho... but again that is a hope. We are looking for long term and this has been in the making for over a year. We are well prepared at home with our families and have always worked together. We're almost ready to roll but need a little help here as we are not into bouncing around to find the right company. He is trying so hard to make the Bowman thing work as neither one of us are interested in tarnishing our job history but a man can only deal with so much.

Thanks for any help, in advance folks.

Here are some suggestions, since you plan to move out west (my family & I moving to Las Vegas is the plan).

    Contacts for teams:

    fairchildfreight.com (reefer)
    systemtrans.com (reefer & flatbed)
    navajo.com (reefer)
    drive4marten.com (reefer)

Check the hiring areas/regional maps, etc. to see if it fits your needs.

Some companies won't hire if you're having child support problems, so keep that in good shape.

Getting home a few times a month sounds tough. I am speaking from a solo point of view, but I don't think its that different for teams. I think most companies what you out for a couple of weeks anyway, then, it takes some time to get you home. Say it takes 7 days to get you home...thats one trip home in 3 weeks, 3 days off, and out again.

On a regional fleet, the miles are probably too short for teaming, but you get home more often.

    Good luck with it though.

Sounds like a line haul gig would be ideal for you guys to work toward (if you dont mind going to the same place all the time), but you may need to bite the bullet and get some exp first. You may be able to get by with 6 months. Good pay and decent home time.

Teaming and home time just don't go hand in hand. Especially if you aren't neighbors! As a team, typically you will expected to run a minimum of 6-8 weeks at a time with usually like 2-4 days off. Teaming is very tough! Not many drivers are up to the teaming thing. You drive 24/7 and run hard! Usually drive and sleep on a 10 hour schedule. It will take some time to get used to sleeping in a moving truck. There are some exceptions and options in companies and types of teaming. A lot of floral runs and such allow for a better schedule in which you run 5-7 day runs returning to where you originally started from to continuously pick up the same type of load. Unfortunately in your area I am not sure of your options. Seafood is another type of load that will allow for this schedule. Runs like this usually originate out of the northeast like Boston with companies like "REX".

What will be tough is finding a company that will allow you to both sign on and then have you train under your partner. Typically they will want you to train with someone who has been with the company or your partner will have to first drive for them for at least three months or so before training you. It maybe beneficial to you to first go through school and training and then drive solo for a bit before deciding on teaming.
