Well, I have only been here at the Chattanooga Terminal since last Sunday and am already feeling the loneliness that comes with the life of a trucker. How do you guys cope with this?
I have to get out of my room and head down to the drivers lounge or smoking area and get around people for a bit of socialization. But, what about when you are driving? What do you do to cope? Keep your mind occupied?

When I was your age I would be in a bar I sure don't reccomend that now however. -
I enjoy my alone time also, but after being laid over for the weekend I had little socialization with people because the majority of my class had already left and this weeks not yet her. With my fiance at work and my daughter at the babysitter I had mainly myself to keep busy.

I had to deal with people all the time. Now I love being alone.

Yea, I went through orientation last week. Got my employee ID, comdata card, etc. My trainer's truck was a trade in so we are waiting on a new one. We were told we had one, but then was told we werent seated in it because of the new qualcom system. So I took the qualcomm class this morning and should be getting a truck first thing tomorrow.
I am already an employee/driver, whatever you like, just no truck to drive. And to be honest, so far I like it here at Covenant despite all the bad I have heard. Everyone has been very polite and helpful, I havent been lied to, and have been provided with a free hotel room and meals. I know that in the future alot will change, but for the time being I am satisfied.Last edited: Apr 19, 2010
jtrnr1951 Thanks this. -
It can be lonley out there especially if you got a girl freind or wife and kids at home. You may decide trucking isn't for you, at least OTR. When you are driving alot of truckers tend to snack on candy, etc, out of boredom or they smoke. Don't be surprised if you gain some weight, or come home with some new bad habits. You may also drink alot of energy drinks and coffee so as to stay awake when you get an all nighter . My wife rides with me alot so I got someone to talk with, and if my trucks rocki'n, don't bother knockin.

I'm an introvert by nature and generally find being around people too draining to enjoy it much. But I did drive my first year or two OTR alone and it was pretty depressing after a while. My next few years OTR I worked for a company that allowed a pet. That was perfect for me. It was great company. I wouldn't go back OTR except with a pet.
Since I've been driving non-OTR I've gotten very much into podcasts and MP3 players like the Apple iPod. Rather than only having what's on satellite radio to choose from or what I can find on AM/FM, I pick from the much larger universe of podcasts and always have stimulating and entertaining shows to listen to, no matter what time of day or night.
I've easily learned more in the truck while I drive than in my years in college. If you want to learn a language, free podcasts are available. Want to study ancient history, free podcasts are available. Want to understand how stars, galaxies, and multiverses work, free podcasts are available. Want to hear jokes about boogers and boobies, that's already on AM/FM but free podcasts are available. Politics, religion, science, history, literature, music, check.
Getting paid to learn all day is the best part of my job.
The easiest way to get started is using Apple iTunes software and looking for podcasts you like in their iTunes store. Most of them are free. You can also Google "podcast directory" for endless lists of podcasts. It's like free cable TV, on your radio or mp3 player. I'm so addicted that I carry a backup mp3 player in case my primary breaks or I loose it. I'd sooner drive without my road atlas than my MP3 player.Boardhauler and lupe Thank this. -
Thanks everyone. I have been keeping myself busy lately on a run from Hazleton, PA to Phoenix, AZ. Drove 622 miles last night, WOW am I tired. But now the only time I feel lonely is when I am totally alone and my trainer is not in the truck, like at a truck stop. That is when the loneliness hits. Other than that I can XM radio all day/nite or talk on the CB when it isnt dead.
