The outer snap ring on the bearing keeps the bearing from going in the case too far. It also happens to be the part that the bearing puller pulls against to remove the bearing. The snap ring groove I am referring to is the one on the input shaft you put on after the bearing is in all the way. With the driver tool you cant pull out on the shaft to get it past the groove on the input shaft before the bearing bottoms out on the outer snap ring to the case. This is the issue he is battling.

I have had to dig one out after someone installed with the outer snap ring removed. It was not fun.

Make sure you line up the oil hole on the front cover.

Years and years ago my dad and I had one of those input shafts out and we made a Puller for the bearing out of a piece of tubular Steel. On one end of the tube we welded in a nut so we could run a bolt through it to the end of the shaft. We welded the other end to the bearing and it pressed out very nicely.

I kept that thing for all these years so I'll do the same thing now to get mine out of there.

The driver that I made I welded a piece of tube on the bottom of the old bearing cover that is the same size as the outer race.

Thanks @Goodysnap for helping me see the way it's supposed to go in there. I'm going to weld a short pipe behind it so I can grab it and really drive it while I can hold the shaft itself with my other hand

I will lube it up the way that you said and I'm sure I won't have any problems.

We have the Eaton puller in the cabinet. More often than not it takes longer to get the puller out of the box and put it together than it does to change the bearing. Big Snap on dead blow hammer and two matched lady slipper pry bars do the trick 9 times out of 10.

    And your welcome.

Have a great Labor Day weekend
