Trying to make sure I don't miss anything so I might have a better chance not to fail.

That may take a while, I gotta get recent experience so Im thinking about a year as company then buy a trailer and sign on a lease deal.
Unless someone takes my past experience and good driving record and says: lets get that CAT rollin.
Last owner said he was averaging 6+ mpg, I will believe it when I see it.

I hate to say you came to the wrong site for insight. honestly help for ppl wanting to take a leap of faith ain't that great in here. But if you look up @rollin coal he had a thread of starting his own company!! Since you aren't going to get your own authority not all will apply to you.. I will say that once you figure out what kind of trucking you want to do you can then see what others in that field have for startup costs. Then you can easily figure out most other costs like plates highway taxes and etc. depending on the company you go with your insurance cost will vary especially since you have a older truck and the value of the truck is lower. Fuel costs is a part of doing business and depending on what type of trailer and freight you pull also what part of the country you are going to be hauling. Also some of the bigger companies get fuel discounts so that also will alter that.
