Stated today that after testing several common products and then comparing records.... they found that manufacturers have decreased the quantity packaged and maintained the current price structure.
Several mfg. were queried and their responses were mixed. Most maintained that rising raw material costs and utilities forced this change. When asked why they didn't just raise prices, they were apprehensive about losing business to a cheaper product.
Consumer Reports found as an average that there is 20% less in each package.
OP/ED: Lays tried this sheet a year or so ago by putting less chips in the same size bag. Lays was caught by todays savy shopper and the women were furious. They retaliated by boycotting the entire product line.
