I would recommend that if you need something like this that you make sure your doctor knows what's required of him and then let your company know.
Sorry to hear what happened to you Dave. It's lousy timing and a little extreme. Hope you find work soon. -
LOL
Well let me work out the truck that will be pulling it then we can talk apparently my f350 idea is terrible and it cannot pull a 25k trailer. Shoulda known better useless fords.
At this rate I might just trade the #### trailer in for a 15 horse van trailer and buy my behind a long nose 379 >.>
But sorry about the job, thats why my husband who is physically incapable of being mad in front of people handles customers because I have a short fuse and run hot. I cannot stand stupid people.
My usual method of dealing with slow loading/unloading is to walk in and ask about how far along are they, then state ok well I am going to put in for detention pay then thanks and walk out. Nearly everytime we are unloaded/loaded within the hour XD -
Dave I'm sorry to hear about losing your job bro. I know things had been tough on you recently, so maybe this is honestly for the best no matter how bad the timing is. I am wondering if some of my messages to the company on QC have me on the road to termination myself. Goodluck bro, things will turn out better in some way or another, it just may require some tough scraping.
truckerdave1970 Thanks this. -
Sometime near the end of 1997, I was driving shorthaul for NTB out of Grand Rapids. I got stuck at Kal-Kan in Columbus for over 12 hours... got pissed... mouthed off... quit over the phone... yada yada yada.
Just about drank myself into a coma after that and ended up getting a DUI while I was living in my car. Rock bottom, man... no way out but up.
Christmas time always had a way of bringing out my temper. I freakin HATE christmas!!! If I had to guess, I'd say most of the jobs I quit or was fired from, came right before christmas. The stress of the extra financial burden at that time of year always sent me over the edge.
Those of you who have very young kids can do yourself a HUGE favor by not perpetuating the lie of Santa Claus. Sure, they love the hell out of "Santa" when daddy has a job... but what do you tell them when Santa got his A-Z-Z canned?
"Uh... sorry kids... Santa said you were all bad this year and you ain't getting nothing."
Hang in there Dave... something else will come along and it might be better than driving a truck. -
Sorry to hear about your loss.
If you don't mind doing a little extra work...
Look for a job in car hauling. You will load your own trailer, and unload it...
WHEN YOU WANT TO!!!
No sitting at docks waiting to get loaded or unloaded. NEVER
And you will be home every few days or so, I have never heard of a car hauler being gone more than a few weeks. Not to mention that you can easily make $1500+ a week. -

To me, that means they aren't legit enough to list with the State Employment Agency.photolurp2 Thanks this. -
OH That sucks big time Dave! I know as I got fired on Dec 4th 08! And I'm STILL looking for a job! Hopefully you'll be able to find a job as you're younger than me!
Let me give you a little advice and this goes for the rest of you who think "open mouth" works on a dock!
As you can see "Open Mouth" got Dave fired. I finally figured out after many years that I have a dispatcher for a reason. When you hit the dock of a shipper or receiver you usually send a message or a call to that travel agent of yours, the dispatcher.
I finally realized that when I walk onto a dock and say something it always got back to the company so I decided to let the company handle ANY problem I had with shippers and receivers! ANY PROBLEM!
If and when I've been on the dock over 2 hours I let my dispatcher know this. I also remind him as to the time I got there AND the time I got backed in. I then let him know this EVERY HOUR after the first 2. I also ask him to call whoever and ask when they will finish with the loading.
Let your company handle this! It's THEIR job anyway. You just drive and supervise the loading! These places get tired of the calls and will get you out unless they are real bottom feeders then you're screwed!
I also believe in the stress management method of "F It"! Ain't nothing worth you having a stroke or heart attack because of a shipper or receiver! Just say "F IT! and sit back and relax! Do not let this crapola get under your skin or someones going to find you slumped over the steering wheel or in the bunk stiff as a board dead as a door nail because you let the stress build up! It ain't worth it!
Now, IF your company doesn't care or lets these places hold their truck without detention pay then it's probably a good time to look for another company! Most "Smart" companies have a clause on their contracts about detention and a lawyer to back them up.
Now, if you THINK being a BAD ARSE will get you loaded or unloaded faster keep thinking and let us know how it works for you! Me, I've seen the pallets being thrown through windows and the fist fights and other stupid things a trucker has tried and the ONLY thing being a Bad Arse gets them is a trip to jail and all the assorted costs that that piles up and a good firing from the company they were with! The ONLY things I say to the clerk is Hello, who I'm with, what I have, how much and Thank you. I smile and that's it! NOTHING else unless they ask me a question! The old saying for children are "better seen than heard" is a good rule for truckers to learn and go by! A job is hard to find and keep these days so a little QUIET at the window is the best rule to follow!
Nah F IT and relax!southbaydad Thanks this. -
I don't agree with this statement. What's the difference between Craigslist and your local newspapers help wanted?
Some of these new truckers and/or truckers with no recent experience are far better off going with a local small operation then these sweat - shop operations so many of you compalin about on this forum (i.e. swift, werner, crengland). *I personally have worked for a small dump truck/trailer, construction operation. The guy had 3 trucks,, all hooked up Peterbilts (really nice equipment), my usual hours were from about 5am -2pm and would often make $1500 a week all local. Granted no benefits, but still, how could you go wrong with that if you have limited experience or no recent experience.
Don't get me wrong I'm sure there are many small operations that stink too.......but your far better off getting your experience in a "easy on your family" local operation. Even if it sucks, it much easier to deal with a sucky situation when your not going to be gone months on end.
Just my opinion on getting some verifiable experience.
