Good afternoon everyone, my name is deelow77 and Im having a issue....So here's my situation...I will be transitioning from the Army back to civi life after 10 years...I'm not the college type nor the office type. After research upon research, I have reached the conclusion that I want to begin a new career as a truck driver. Here's the catch though. In 1997 when was 19 I pleaded "no contest" to felony theft. From what I've read from different companies, some will not touch a felony, others will after significant time...i learned not to hangout with those guys anymore and straightened out. However in September 2011, I plead guilty to DWAI here in colorado. I'll begin my terminal leave in April 2015 and I'm moving to San Antonio, Tx. My question is, is there any chance to get hired by a trucking company after receiving my CDL from a school? Or am I just gonna waste my time and gi bill? Any feed back is welcome...thanks ahead of time.

The felony is old enough to where it shouldn't be a problem. Your problem is going to be the DWIA.

Yea that's what I was thinking too...I've seen there are some companies that will still consider you after 3 years, but most want 5...I figure maybe one will give me a chance since the DWAI will be over 3 years when I complete my cdl course, God willing. Thank you for the reply.

Several companies will hire you. There's companies that hire even if you just got released from prison. Yes, go to CDL school and get started.

Thanks for the feedback bro, it really gives me encouragement to hear this...it's funny to me that I find more nerve wrecking to go back to civilian life than flying across the water...

I understand. Many, many veterans go into trucking & I'm one of them. I enjoyed the solitude of night driving with a thermos of hot coffee and XM Satellite Radio while running coast-to-coast. Trucking is a good fit for anyone that doesn't want constant personal interaction with other people.

Yea, that's one of my biggest attractions...I've been on so many road trips from either Ft Stewart to San Antonio, and Ft Carson to San Antonio, I just love being on the road...to me it's not about the money, more about loving what you're doing. People tell me about being away from my family, but bring military, we are pretty used to being apart for long periods of time.

Every company hires from Roadmaster. It's a good school.
Your DWAI will be over 4 years old by the time you graduate and lots of companies will hire you. Many bend their own hiring rules.
I think Havlor Lines hires if no DWAI within 3 years. Paschall Truck Lines is flexible.
Several other companies also, no problem.

Listen to China, man knows his ####.

Thank you for your service. Get your cdl from school and research research research, then research some more. Don't sign up for the first company that comes sees your class in school. Being that your dwai is do old many will be fine with it. Even more so if you completed some program. I'm a vet as well and signed up with TMC, they are very military friendly, but very strict rules. You might give them a call and speak with Brad our Gus.They can give you an idea.

I wish the best for you, and hope you find what you are searching for.
