Watkins-Shepard has a terminal in Denver and hires new CDL grads; good company. Click on the blue word, Denver.

I just retired from the military a couple of years ago and have been going to school as well as working odd jobs. I found that I don't really have a lot in common with my co-workers, so I have been looking into trucking. I'm glad to know that it is a good fit for those of us that enjoy solitude and less personal contact.

There's some good trucking jobs around Las Vegas. In fact, Watkins-Shepard has a terminal there also, but plenty of other companies hire out of Las Vegas.

That is good to know. I have been really kicking around the idea of stopping my degree program for awhile and using my Post 9/11 GI bill to attend Southwest Truck Driver Training here in Las Vegas. I could always come back to my degree program later on down the road once I got some truck driving time under my belt. Who knows, I may love the road so much that I never go back to school.

You and Deelow77 get all the endorsements, TWIC and passport before graduation from CDL school. This will give you more opportunities for better paying jobs. Many college/university grads are transitioning to trucking due to the economy now and discovering it a fulfilling career.

Sometimes UPS Freight hires new CDL grads for OTR van division. This isn't home delivery either, it's OTR.

I'm definitely gonna try to get my hazmat and twic...I just hope I don't get denied for them cuz my past...I got 9 months to go, and I really can't wait to get this new start going. But like I said before, I'm more nervous about going back to civilian life than I was ever going to Iraq and 'stan...at least I knew what to expect out there! lol

It's very hard to not qualify for TWIC & hazmat. Many ex-con's qualify. Has to be some serious stuff to not qualify. The websites will show this. Can't go to Canada with felony record or DUI but to many drivers that's a blessing; still that won't keep you from making some high dollar paychecks in the good old USA.

Just some quick advice concerning the GI Bill. If it is anything like the Post 9/11 it will be slow going when it comes to getting your eligibility letter. The sooner you can submit the eligibility form the quicker you can get to using the GI Bill towards your CDL.

Yea I have the post 9/11...I just did the paperwork for the COE 2 weeks ago. I'm not tryin to wait last minute. I am debating tho how many months I should keep for myself, I transferred most of it to my wife and kept 6 months for myself. But with all these apprenticeships, I'm thinking of just keeping 18 months for me and leave her 18 also...the cdl will take 2-3 months, then most apprenticeships seem to be a year...so I'm leaning to grabbing some of those back. But yea, should be getting my COE in the next few weeks

Good deal. The CDL training school here Las Vegas is only about 4 weeks long. I wasn't aware that trucking companies offered an apprenticeship program. Hmmmm...I guess I should look into although I'm not sure I would qualify for the program once I have my CDL in hand.
