The trouble is when you sign onto a carrier for training you sign a contract the restricts you to a time frame which you must work for them in exchange for training and if you break that contract you will be resposible for paying for that training which could be thousands of dollars.. Maybe do like I did find a technical college that has truck driver training and file for financial aid that way you can get your cdl and pay the money back when your in the driving field making more money. worked for me and I was not tied down to a carrier for a year or two:biggrin_255:

I guess that is probable but not normally practical! But if you like their antics then go for it!

From the general sound of the not wanting to be away from child and girlfriend, why don't you check with the LTL or Beverage companies about starting on the docks. A lot of them have apprenticeship programs where they will help you get your CDL. Then you may never have to be away from your young family.

    mje and BigBear60 Thank this.

Sounds likr your heart is in this so I say go for it.People that are sincere about trucking are the ones that will succeed. But if you choose the company sponsored training route you'll have to sign a yr contract. One should stay a yr anyway to get the exp.A few short months isn't even long enough to know if you like the company or not.

Not sure if there are any Publix DCs up you way yet. Many drivers that started in their DCs eventually earned the privilidge to drive their trucks and retired early.

If family is important to you, why are you even considering this profession?

What kind of question is that. Of course my family is important to me, matter of fact thats the most important thing to me. I always wanted to be a truck driver but i ended up going to college for sports but college just isnt for me. I would rather do something i love doing.

I just found a few ltl companies thats located in Charleston, SC which is not to far away from me that i will be going to this week. Hopefully they do have apprenticeship programs because that would really work for me.

    mje Thanks this.
