Don't know if it makes a difference, but I'm in San Angelo, TX.

My question for those who've hunted down good local routes is, from your own experience, is it better to call all of the big companies for finding a local route, or to can local? I all because all of the local places I see have relatively poor reviews, most pay by the hour, also pay less than bigger companies. But I'm looking to work in my area and be home more, if possible every night or every other night, so I don't mind taking a bit of a pay hit, since I can make up for that with groceries (otr food costs are killer).

    Anything y'all recommend?

    Try your local LTL carriers.

Try some of the Asphalt and Concrete companies. Lowes, Home Depot most of them are farmed out to JB Hunt or some mega carrier.
