Your first year on the road, it would be wise to save that money, IMO. It's what I did. I had a big garage sale and sold off all my useless crap, boxed up the memories and firearms, and kept them at my mom's house. Take time off where you want, get an extended stay hotel, rent a car from enterprise and pretend your a paid tourist. Skiing at Breckenridge, sure. Hiking the Appalachian Trail, yep. Check out the night life in Nashville, you betcha. If you do this every two months, you'll still have a nice bankroll at the end of the year if you don't blow every penny in the truckstops. Enjoy your time OTR. Once you have a year OTR, your options for great jobs dramatically increase. Maybe a regional job, where your home every weekend, or a local job where your home every night, and obviously your housing situation will change.

It's entirely a personal decision, and one you should consider carefully. Some people need the security of having a home to go back to. They like having all their junk around them in their own place. It really can be a need for some folks to have that. But for others, having a home and stuff is just more responsibility and who wants to deal with it on time off?

If you currently have a place, you may want to hang onto it for a month or two to see how trucking works out for you (not everyone succeeds in this industry) and to have a better idea of the consequences of your decision.

There is no right or wrong way. Both options are plausible. Make the choice that best suits you.

You also need an address to get your CDL. But in realty you can use a friend or relatives address for this. The problem is not the address however. I know of an OTR driver that got all of his traveling deductions disallowed after an audit because he could not produce any utility bills with his address clearly on them as they matched his CDL address.
