Yeah, I know the norm these days is to do an average of 10 over for the 4 wheelers, since it isn't worth it for the cops to write the ticket, but IF they were to slow down a bit, things might be a bit smoother out there. They would also get better fuel mileage at 65 than they do at 75.
It would be nice if the powers that be were to get some good solid stats that show the split speed limit is more dangerous, as that way, maybe those could be done away with.
Texas sure isn't making trucks turn up their governors. My hubby's governed at 64, and is in Texas a lot. He hasn't been pulled in. That wouldn't be able to happen unless all speed limits are uniform across the country at all times of the day.
Couple of things Truckers Do...but why?

1 more reason we pull in the left lane in front of you is, most 4 wheelers will slow down before passing a truck, they just sit in the left lane by the back of the trailer blocking us in. Once they pass us they hammer back down. When I need to pass a truck and I have a car in the left lane scared to pass me, I'll move left and then flash my lights for a "thank you". They usually flip me off when they pass me.
Now I'm in a 62mph truck so I rarely pass anyone, I get passed by those fast Yellow trucks now, but the pay is great -
Want stats ? You got 'em . http://dailyheadlines.uark.edu/8286.htm

Here's a recent study in Canada http://www.tc.gc.ca/roadsafety/tp/tp14807/menu.htm . Note where traffic is close to capacity speed limiters reduce the safety level . And if you want to know the real reason ATA petitioned for speed limiters
it's to level the playing field , slow the competition http://www.etrucker.com/apps/news/article.asp?id=56699 . But in reality , ATA really wants an advantage . Anybody that runs states with speed limits of 65 m.p.h. or less knows the "speeding guys with the competitive advantage " are the ATA companies that cosigned the speed limiter petition , most often U.S. Xpress and Jet Express . So there's the info . Who are you going to send it to ? -
I have always said it was nothing to do with safety but large corporations trying to snuff out the competition... (that being O/O) -
Thanks for reminding me . I forgot an article http://www.nytimes.com/2005/11/27/national/27safety.html?_r=1&oref=slogin
An ATA spokesman acknowledges making trucks drive slower increases the potential for accidents . The following year ATA petitions for speed limiters because ????? -
When I drive my car on home time, I am in great fear, because I can't see all the things I can see when in my truck. I can see behind the car in the left lane for at least a quarter of a mile. I can't see but 2 cars while in my car.
I do always appreciate when a car flashes their headlight to let me over. Often, a car will hold back for me to come over, by the time I realized they are holding back, they are out of patience. So sometimes I move and sometimes I am scared to move because I don't know if they have lost their patience with me. The only way I know they are holding back and waiting for me to come over is the flash of the headlights. I thank, thank, thank, them with a minimum of 4 clearance light flashes.
I am a woman driver and been driving professionally since 1979. I am currently accident free for 3+ million miles, that is because I know before I move. In addition to space, space, space, between me and the person in front of me.
Oh something a car does that I wish they understood not to do is take away my space. Especially, coming up to a traffic signal, I'm backing off for 2 reasons. To time the stop (or not have to stop) or I'm standing on my brakes because I weigh 79k. Please don't enter my space.
roadkill4512 Thanks this. -
Way to go on the 3+ million accident free!
Amen on not invading the space too! -
I never trust a 4 wheeler flashing its lights . I've seen several flash their lights just before they passed me . Note in this article where they say "Flash to pass " means "Please let me pass , thank you " . http://blogs.consumerreports.org/cars/2007/12/cts-flash-pass.html I know of one fatality due to this . A truck passed a car and the car deliberately stayed the same speed by the trailer axle hanging him out in the lane . The truck kept his turn signal on . The car flashed its lights , intending to speed up and pass on the right . The truck driver saw the flash , moved right and hit the car , spinning it out of control and the driver was killed . Several witness said the car had been harassing the truck driver for several miles.

This is not a problem if I can see that there is a much faster truck approaching one that is going slower, I will slow down knowing that they will want to pass.
I have the problem when I am going uphill in my car (I can easily go 70 uphill) and a truck that is between two others (going equally as slow) signals for a second and cuts over in front of me and I have to slam on my brakes to avoid hitting them. He can easily see that there is nothing behind me.... why not wait? This happened to me on the 40 when you are just going into AZ. -
They aren't going equally slow, you just think they are.
