at least do the posted speed in all 48 states and leave it up to the driver to be responsible for things that happen

Unfortunately, even though I don't like it, I only see more government control in the future. :biggrin_2552: We can fight it all we want (and we will,) but eventually they will have it their way. They will track us openly in every state and shut us down for the slightest infraction even worse than they do now. But don't think it's all doom and gloom. I still believe in the great capitalistic way. If they want the freight, they'll still have to pay us to get it there.

I've seen strong possibility of a government mandated 68 mph max speed, and 65 mph national truck speed limit. I expect that to happen...and that's wild, considering that it would spread into the owner/operator side with inspectors verifying computer control levels for speed settings. Frikkin scary.

I'm getting out of this next month, starting a brokerage business....and letting the attorneys loose on CRE.

Thanks guys, I'm a soon to retire military guy that just posted a question, under that same heading. Guess I should have checked out this area first. I'm starting to think my driving experiences and romaticized vision of what otr trucking is like, may be way off the mark. I don't mind working hard or long, but I'm not going to get treated poorly at almost 40.

its not really being treat poorly all ir really comes down to is how does a company driver get any respect when they are out of hours or even almost out of hours and told they have to run it any ways so you tell me where the hell the respect is

I'm former military, and the biggest thing I've had to swallow is the total lack of respect that drivers get. To many out there, we're lower than pond scum and twice as dumb...so if you're used to that mutual respect and comradery from the military, it'll be a hard pill to swallow if you're having to take some of the stuff that gets handed out to drivers.

That said, some drivers act like total morons, cursing and freaking out on shippers and dispatchers..and you get what you give out. Those guys ruin it for the rest of us, though.

You are correct ronin some drivers are quite possibly a wee bit mental to put it mildly. As for lack of respect, there is is a lot of it out there for drivers most likely because of such buffoons. I sat in a warehouse parking lot for over six hours once, went in asked the guy how much longer before they start unloading me. He wasn't sure, so I ask if I can use a restroom, he says no restrooms for truck drivers but I can unhook trailer and bobtail about 2 miles away to a truck stop he told me about. Needless to say after a year of OTR I started in a lot more specialized field than standard freight hauling.

To BisonBoy: I would recommend that you get some info and look for jobs that are specialized---flatbed, liquid tankers(fuel, chemicals, etc..), dry bulk pneumatics(cement, lime, soda ash, foodstuffs, etc..) maybe even hauling those autohaulers. I really think unless you get hooked up with just the right situation hauling dry van or reefer freight it will drive ya crazy. I retired from the Fire Dept. and made this my 2nd career and General OTR freight is so mismanaged it will drive you buggy if you are used to order.
