TERMINOUS - An Illinois man died and several others were hurt Saturday on a notorious Delta stretch of Highway 12 after the driver of a big rig plowed through a line of traffic stopped for an open bridge.

The afternoon wreck just west of Lodi and Interstate 5 tied up westbound traffic on the narrow, two-lane rural highway for several hours.
California Highway Patrol officials said that at about 1:45 p.m., the bridge on the far west end of Bouldin Island had opened to let Delta boat traffic through. All of the bridge's traffic warning lights were working properly, the CHP said, and vehicle traffic stopped.

In the meantime, officers said Edwin Soper, 56, of Diamond Springs was driving a freight truck west at 45 to 55 mph and, for unknown reasons, failed to slow down for the stopped traffic, officers said.
Soper slammed on his brakes just before ramming into a Chevrolet pickup driven by a 48-year-old Illinois man, pushing the pickup off the road and into a grassy ditch.

The man, whose name was not released because his family had not been notified, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The big rig continued to barrel forward, CHP officers said, and slammed into the back of three more vehicles, pushing each of them out of its path before coming to rest in the grassy, northern shoulder of the highway.
The truck's driver suffered minor injuries, officers said, and was taken to Lodi Memorial Hospital. Officers said alcohol or drugs were not a factor in the crash.

Six other occupants in the other three cars reported minor to moderate injuries and were treated at area hospitals, officers said. Two children, 2 and 4, who were riding in one of the vehicles were taken to Dameron Hospital as a precaution, the CHP reported.

I wonder if he was an "illegal imigrant", (ROTFLMFAO) that term just make me puke, that didnt understand what red lights and parked cars meant.

It was a driver for May Trucking Co. driv'n there truck and trailer.
