The recruiter I just spoke to told me that they were switching to team drivers only (company trucks) starting January something (I forget the exact date). I was also told that I would have to take a refresher course, 7-10 days orientation, and 90 days on the road with a trainer after having spent 7 weeks on the road with a trainer from Werner only to be told there were no positions available after finishing my training hours with them. After being on leave for 30 days, they automatically took me out of the system and I was no longer employed by Werner.
I feel like I just wasted 5k on truck driving school over the summer along with about a half a years worth of my time.. and I'm about to run out of money to pay the bills.. and I'm only 21 years old, so most companies can't hire me anyway because of legal age requirements (according to their insurance or whatever)..
The only shot I have at an OTR job right now is Swift.. that's assuming nothing that recruiter has been telling me has changed..
If I can't do that, then I'm going to get stuck driving for a crappy local company doing mini mart deliveries 16 hours a day in the winter (I'm in the northeast).. its either that or I stop paying my bills and destroy my perfect credit history..
I hate my life right now...

Man that sucks.
But welcome to the big show anyway. -
This show sucks so far...

after you get in a truck.

I live in Northeastern, PA. They have a terminal in New Jersey and their coverage area appears to extend just far enough into PA for my house to be within it.
I just need to know if they'll hire me at 21 and if they have any positions available.
This is really aggravating. I'm 21 years old and I've got very little experience driving a truck, yet I can drive as good or better than most people with 5+ years of experience... and here I am with hardly any options due to my age, lack of experience, and the craptastic economic conditions.
I'm not the type to brag about anything. I don't like the attention. But I can drive a truck #### good and I actually like it.. finally something in my life that I really like doing and I feel like I'm running into a series of massive concrete walls..
Oh well. -
You shouldn't have any problems. But times being what they are. You may.
Keep your fingers crossed. -
Not much changed over the course of that 7 weeks after the first week or two.
CRE wants me to do 90 days.. 3 months.. I did just over half of that with Werner and that was still double the amount of time I actually needed with a trainer.
Again, not trying to sound all high and mighty, but I'm very intelligent and a #### good driver. If I ever get settled in with a company, within the next year or two I'm still very much considering going back to college to pursue a career in the medical field.
I left Penn State with a 4.0 in my final semester... I didn't know what I was going for yet and because of that it was too boring...Last edited by a moderator: Feb 8, 2009

That's a tough story, I feel your pain and know what you're going through. However, if you're as good as you say you are and love driving as much as you say you do, I think success will be inevitable. Its just a matter of persisting and overcoming these obstacles and you'll eventually get the job you want. Your time with Werner wasn't an entire waste - you got valuable training and over the road experience. Now its just a matter of landing the right job. Don't drive teams by the way, it sucks! Truck never stops, constant "jet lag" driving different shifts around the clock, and its tough to find a good teammate. You'll make it, just keep pluggin away.
Baack and luvtheroad Thank this. -
I have read on here about drivers when they get done with their trainer swift don't have a truck for them either so it would really suck for it to happen to you there over there also. Just a warning.
