I first started looking at containers as living/working space about 10-12 years ago. Since then I have purchased several and modified them for working out of as shop/site office. I have drawn up plans to use them as living space, but have not built any for that purpose.
What got me started was I was working on some projects to build modular housing and hotels and then I was looking at some property that was in an extremely remote area. Rather than take all the supplies and manpower to location (there was NO infrastructure for hundreds of miles), we would build out the containers, truck them in and place them and do the final connections and finishing. Of course this type of (temporary) housing model has been in use in the oil and mining industries for decades, but those camps are typically low-qualty construction. We were looking for something considerably more robust and long-term. Then I stumbled across the Keetwonen student housing project (which is now for sale).

There's a small apartment building made of shipping containers in Encinal, TX, I-35, exit 39, on the west side of the interstate across from the Love's and Road Ranger. It was the first building of what was going to be a complex but it was started about the same time oil took a dive...
