I am willing to bet that if you research into this you'll find that WM is at the bottom of it.

Same as when they allow overflow loads out to companies like Landstar and others. When you sign up its 5 day or 70 hr blocks of time.

Good luck with Shaffer. I quit Crete myself last week as the hassle of getting home after the requested date and having dispatch ignore my requests to go home made Cretes's pay not worth it for me. While I was processing out three other drivers were stranded at the SLC terminal trying to get home and also looking for another company. I went to Knight and am loving the Volvo. Hopefully they can keep me moving. I don't know what is up with Crete's dispatch, but they sure are missing it IMO. I believe Crete has A STEAMROLLER effect going on right now with drivers leaving because they are not getting home, freight not getting covered, and so more drivers not getting home, just my opinion from talking to drivers and being offered loads with no time to meet the p.u. appointment......

we are o/o and used to haul del monte to wal mart . now we're with another carrier and pull reefer (meat). Wal mart feels we should pay $ 165 for some guy to unload THEIR freight when the guy probably makes $10 an hour. If we're late(we've never been but know guys who were) you'll sit till the next day when THEY have time to reschedule. But we've set up to 6 hours and wal mart doesn't pay detention. As to your leaving after ten years don't blame you. This is your money, your income. Crete lost a good driver that I'm sure many companies out there would sure like to have. preciate the info and keep us updated on your situation. best of luck.

no, this is a full (year long) contract between WM and Crete for Crete to provide x number of trucks and x number of drivers 24/7. ( if I recall, Werner shares the contract and the office space with Crete up at the Sterling, IL DC)
Crete is dropping the contract when it expires in September, but meanwhile they are having to scramble to fill seats up there.
My opinion is that the sales/marketing guy who committed crete to a bad contract is the one who should be left to hang out to dry.
Crete should bite the bullet, pay drivers full compensation to drive the fleet, and write the loss off as a lesson.
This is a company that has profit sharing and considers that a perk to motivate drivers to cut corners to help Crete save money (idling, fuel solutions, etc).
But I don't agree that pulling money out of the drivers pocket (by way of low pay) to fund a lousy contract is in line with being a driver friendly company.

sorry to hear that. Basically I feel Crete (and Shaffer) are really good companies, but communication just seems to be a skill many in the management are lacking.
Had my manager done his job, and negotiated between his driver and dispatch, I would still be there.
I've had a few incidents in my 4 years when I was frustrated by home time screw ups, but overall have had good luck with them. Its just the older I get and the more miles I put behind me, the less patience I have for management that won't manage.bb.

I agree , Crete etc is a good place to work, but not if you live on the west coast and want to get home IMO. SLC wanted me to stay with the west coast regional, but I saw they were only getting 2200- 2400 mi a week average ( Crete'd website) so I passed. I am only 15 miles from Knight's Boise terminal so this might work well.

My complaint with Crete back in 2002 was home time. Or lack of it, I should say. I remember being gone on one tour for 49 days straight, probably 44 of which I was east of the Mississppi (I was living in Utah). Talk about cabin fever. I had begun to ask for hometime on that tour around day 21 or so.

That was the last time I did an extended tour, as I moved to the western fleet right after. That did the trick, as I got home about every five days from then on. I had to take a 2-cents-per-mile pay cut, however.

BB, I think Shaffer is a good move for you. You're in Pennsylvania, as is Shaffer's HQ. From what I've gathered, Shaffer is a good reefer outfit.

Now I ask: is flatbed about the only thing left that Wal-mart doesn't have its hands in? Talk about something that's gotten too big for its britches. Wal-Mart has defintely got to be taken down a rung or three.

There's only one way to bring them down, and that is to boycott their #####. I haven't been in a Wal-Mart in over six months, which is quite a feat for a marginalized poor boy these days. I hope to go two years without setting foot in a Wal-mart or buying anything made in China (Chinese-made crap makes up most of Wally's inventory). Wish me luck here.

Wal-mart is an economic whirlpool. It offers supposedly low prices, which attracts more people. When these folks buy things at Wal-mart instead of the mom and pops, it puts those M & Ps out of business sooner or later. When those businesses go down, their employees are thrown out of work, meaning those employees then MUST buy things they need at the lowest prices. Where do they go for the lowest prices? It's a viscious downward spiral that needs to be cut. Where are the big government boys when you need them? Oh, there they are on CNN going after that NBA ref who supposedly fixed games, or Barry Bonds who supposedly used 'roids while playing glorified stick-ball.

Update : I was 100% wrong about Shaffer being reasonable in my re-hire.
I just got off the phone with them and they said that after talking to my Crete manager, I would be required, by SHAFFER, to go back and work that full week underpaid at the Illinois Walmart DC.
I told him I was applying for work in the SE fleet and by no means would accept that blackmail. So my only recourse is to challange the decision by writing to the owner, Dwayne Aklie. But, as with other things, if they are in the wrong as I think they are, then why would I want to fight for a job there. Goodbye Acklie companies.

Crete owns Shaffer - wouldn't that be just a transfer?
