I think I set a personal best in the Tractor Trailer category. Never dropped below 40.
(I have made even better time in other vehicles, but those also required freakishly empty roads.)
With 70% of the volume removed, the Cross Bronx actually acts like a proper highway. Imagine that?
So, obvious to everyone EXCEPT the "traffic engineer" they were interviewing on the radio (because speeding is up in Manhattan, and that idiot wrecked his Porsche yesterday) the problem has always been capacity!
I can't explain to people who don't live in NYC the institutional hatred for Robert Mosses, but it permeates all levels of government, society and education.
And I'm not defending the guy, he destroyed architectural landmarks and divided neighborhoods (possibly on the basis of racism according to some) but unlike the following 60 years of city planning he actually DID something instead of endless meetings, hearings, fraud, waste, and frivolous side projects.
Cross Bronx Expressway lives up to its name for once.

Southern Blvd subway platform.
About halfway from Whitestone to GWB -
I've seen enough of NYC traffic on TV and movies to know I have zero interest in being anywhere near there.

Not after 3rd avenue.
Thanks for playing.
Also, some poor SOB was trying to get on from the Sheridan at a nearly perpendicular angle.
I guess he slid his tandems back and Hunts Point and was too lazy to tighten up again. Couldn't get around the cork screw.
So he's way out in the right lane and I let all the 4 wheelers that were jamming on the brakes escape to the center.
Aim high in steering!
